1985 Fontalloro

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Deep red with a bricking rim in the early stages of maturity. Very odd on the nose - flattened plastic and red cherries! The palate is fragrant and perfumed on entry, then a strong tannic element emerges, but the overall impressions remains one of a very fine, fragrant and attractive wine. This has a terrific structure and tannic core, with huge tannins that give the wine a real presence. The finish is big, chewy and fruity. A youthful and great wine. Served blind this was guessed to be sangiovese based wine, perhaps a Chianti from the early 1990's? (Note that Fontalloro is a sangiovese based Tuscan IGT wine.) 90/100. Drunk 10-Apr-15 as part of the Doty Cup.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
