2003 Sainsbury Taste The Difference

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

It seems that Sainsbury are de-listing this port from their stores. I say this as shops which I cleared out on Monday have now removed the label and space for the 2003 TTD VP and have not restocked.

I drove a rather circuitous route yesterday to get to and from the office in Milton Keynes. Coincdentally, this circuitous route took me past 18 different branches of Sainsbury. 2 had no stock, 1 (High Wycombe) had lots of stock but all priced at £25 per bottle. All other branches had 2-4 bottles in stock at @£15 per bottle.

So, for the team I have acquired the grand total of 43 bottles. Those who want some should post here rather than in the Port For Sale By Retailer thread so as to avoid cluttering up that thread. Bottles committed so far are:
1-6 to JDAW
7-8 to RAYC
9-10 to Griff (let me know if you'd like more)
11-12 to DJ (let me know if you'd like more)
13-42 as yet unallocated, but will go to JDAW if no-one else shouts
43 to AHB

Well done! What commitment!

I'd take another 6 if available (bottles 13-18)

This is quite amazing. What an effort! I think to help save JDAW from himself I'll take another 2 off your hands (19-20).

To save JDAW any difficulty, I’ll take those that would otherwise go to him.

Thank you.

JDAW made it clear prior to my road trip that he was willing to take up to 4 dozen from me. In view of this and of the surprising demand from others, I will ensure that JDAW is treated fairly and receives at least 2 cases (of 12). Bottles committed so far are:
1-24 to JDAW
25-30 to RAYC
31-32 to RAYC
33-34 to Griff (let me know if you'd like more)
35-38 to DJ
39-42 as yet unallocated, but will go to JDAW if no-one else shouts
43 to AHB

Thanks - feel free to take me down to 2 and re-allocate to jdaw1 if he feels short-changed. I was only putting my hand up for 8 on the basis that 6 went into long-term storage at Seckfords and 2 would be squeezed into my already over-crowded short-term storage to be drunk. I want the ones for drinking, but can live without the other 6!

I only have 4 unallocated. You can have those, but if you want to have a 6 pack for storage you'll need to talk nicely to Rob.

I collected another 13 on my way home today. Sainsbury will be very impressed when they analyse my collection of nectar points this month.

Ben - do you want the 6 you requested? If so, status of the available ports is as follows:
1-24 to JDAW
25-30 to RAYC
31-32 to RAYC
33-34 to Griff (let me know if you'd like more)
35-38 to DJ
39-44 to BMHR
45-55 as yet unallocated, but will go to JDAW if no-one else shouts
56 to AHB

I am heading home from London tomorrow and then to Edinburgh via Glasgow on Friday.

If there is an appetite for more of this please let me know and I will sweep out the shelves north of Watford.

It's like Warre Bottle Matured LBV from Asda all over again, just a few years later and three times the price

You may as well; JDAW will buy it all from you if nobody else does. And once you announce to us that you have stopped in 47 Sainsbury's* and purchased 456 bottles of STTD 2003, we'll all step up to the mark too, and doubtless JDAW will be miffed that he only got 332...

*There is no convenient plural of a noun that is formed from a possessive. This is not an apostrophe crime. Sainsbury'ses? I think not.

The brand name is Sainsbury. When going to one store it is perfectly acceptable to be "going to Sainsbury's". When sweeping shelves in multiple stores it is perfectly acceptable to be "visiting a number of Sainsburys". What's the problem?

No that's fine, I can go with that, just don't want to be hauled up by the grammar police and pelted with apostrophes in the public square.

I prefer with the apostrophe, as used by the company itself.

But the name (and principle brand) of the company is J Sainsbury. Visiting many of its stores is quite rightly "visiting a number of Sainsburys".

I think that that the plan is to visit the store, with apostrophe, rather than the holding company, without.

The Economist style guide considers a similar issue

I think "visiting a number of Sainsbury's stores" would be safer (the use of "Sainsbury's" being adjectival, as opposed to possessive!)

My god.. this is becoming a lot more complex than a bootful of bargain BOBs! Let me see.. it's an adjectival noun, developed from the possessive.. "John Sainsbury's shop" - isn't it??

So having waded through a whole pile of pointless twaddle, I think the situation with the STDs that I have in my garage is as follows:

1-24 to JDAW (to Seckfords)
25-30 to RAYC
31-32 to RAYC
33-38 to DJ
39-44 to BMHR
45-50 to JDAW (to Seckfords)
51-53 to Griff (collect 4 June)
54-55 as yet unallocated, but will go to JDAW if no-one else shouts
56 to AHB

My credit card has taken a bit of a hammering recently, so please can I collect money from each of you. PM me is you need my account details. I shall leave you to calculate £15 x number of bottles.

Please also PM me to say what you would like me to do with your bottles. I have to be in Ipswich on June 20th so will happily drop off at Seckfords if desired.

@AHB - if the offer is ongoing and you were to happen to accidentally purchase another 6 bottles looking for a home, I would happily take them (ideally to Seckfords).

No problem; I picked up four this morning in Thetford, and have a couple of other stores to try and get a couple more so I can drop them off at Seckford myself later this month). Please assume I am sorted; if you have gained extra before seeing this I will of course take them!

edit: I note that there are currently two bottles (54-55) currently unallocated; Could they nominally be assigned to me in case I am unable to find an additional two to complete a set of six for Seckfords? If I am able to find more tomorrow/Mon then I will post and can either free them back up for JDAW or still take them if preferred.

I have managed to purchase a further three bottles this morning, so now have my target. I am happy for bottles 54-55 to be re-assigned to JDAW, or will honour the above if JDAW does not want them.
