Post by jdaw1 »

In a bottle of Fonseca 1963 was a question rather than a certain answer:

Recognising that this scientific question needed scientific experiment, a round dozen of us gathered to test some 1963s.

This was a bit rough, nowhere near as good as the CaF63 tasted at last year's Calem vertical. This one was quite rough, and had slight toffee notes.

35% opacity, yellow brown, cloudy. Overripe soft fruits on the nose, melons perhaps. Sweet, flabby, no backbone.

CáF63: red-orange, 40%. Acidic; closed; grapefruit. Not good.

Bottled by the Wine Society. A light rust-brown colour with a green edge; 25% opaque. Unpleasant and oxidised on the nose; light on the palate with oxidised flavours. A burnt biscuit finish of good length, freshened by some nice acidity. This wine has a pleasant finish but everything else is poor. 74
