Aloirado

Post by JB vintage »

I have a few old bottles of NV port with the word Aloirado written on the lable. Translations says that is means "blondish". Is that another word for Tawny? or is it perhaps a white port? I have tried a few of them as aperitifs and they have all been lovely. As the wines are about 60-70 years old you cannot tell by the color if it is tawny or white. I thought in the past that they were old white ports but I am now inclined to believe tawny. Anyone who knows?

Pictures of Real vinicola aloirado, Burmester Aloirado and Real Velha Tinto Aloirado. I have googled aloirado and most sites says it means tawny and that tinto aloirado means ruby. However, intuitively tinto aloirado ought to mean light red, thus tawny (?) according to my interpretation, but i do not know. Any Portuguese speaking port lovers who knows?
