Does anyone now any good port wine quotes? I start of with a few
‘The first duty of Port is to be red’
Ernest Cockburn
‘Wine is a drink for boys ”“ Port for men’
Churchill
‘Any time not drinking port is a waste of time’
Percy Croft
‘The shortest way between two people is a smile - the lasting one a glass of Port!’
Unknown
‘If out of sort we stick to port
The medicine of soul
A ruby gleam - a tawny dream
The vintage is the goal’
Unknown

Re: port quotes
Reading some books I was supposed to be moving today I came across;
‘Port is the wine proper to the heavy drinker, and it may be admitted that whereas champagne, claret, burgundy and hock are all entirely beneficial and indeed in a well ordered constitution, essential to the digestion of food, port, and the very finest port at that can be slightly deleterious. Its charm insidiously invites excess, and excess of port though not in itself harmful, sometimes discloses latent infirmities. The heavy port drinker must be prepared to make some sacrifice of personal beauty and agility. Its martyrs are usually well content with the bargain and in consolation it may be remarked that a red nose never lost a friend worth holding and that by universal testimony the sharpest attacks of gout are preceded by a period of peculiar mental lucidity.’
And the writer is?

Clearly this is a trick question. The writer in question is some sort of great gourmand unexpectedly restraining himself on the question of port. Is it Churchill?

Not a trick question, the man in question is more renowned for his fictional description of drinking, it was his son who was the wine writer.

Of course Creighton Churchill (son of the American novelist Winston Churchill) was a distinguished wine writer...LGTrotter wrote:Not a trick question, the man in question is more renowned for his fictional description of drinking, it was his son who was the wine writer.

True Auberon was better known as a sketch writer/curmudgeon-in-chief, a role he sort of inherited from Evelyn. Can't think of another question right now, surely you have a little teaser for us all?

What port was served at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 7th March 2006 at the ‟State Banquet in honour of The President of the Federative Republic of Brazil and Senhora Lula da Silva”?

"Port wine, olive oil and chocolate"

It killed her, of course, on the 4th August 1997

It would have been a great quiz if you'd asked us what age she lived to (without Googling).uncle tom wrote:"Port wine, olive oil and chocolate"

Re: port quotes
I have absolutely no idea but a "da Silva" vintage port would have been suitable I would think. Even more so as Clemente da Silva came from Brazil as he set up the the port firm of C. da Silva. What port was served at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 7th March 2006 at the ‟State Banquet in honour of The President of the Federative Republic of Brazil and Senhora Lula da Silva”?

Now I'm stuck.
Didn't they have some of those recalcitrant thirty-fives?
Or you could give a clue, or allow the use of google.

Google unhelpful. Royal Port 1963 served to Obama in 2011. Something similar?

Out of curiosity I looked up the menu for the state dinner staged for David Cameron's visit to Washington last year.
All the food items were described in great detail, including where they were grown. But at the end it simply said 'an American wine will be paired with each course'
- I'm sure the American winemakers really appreciated that.....

"The American President resembles the commander of a ship at sea. He must have a helm to grasp, a course to steer, a port to seek."
Henry Adams
I don't know what type of Port he is referring to though, but I would assume Vintage.
