1878 Taylor

Post by jdaw1 »

This was a serious vertical of seriously mature Taylor’s Port, 1878 to 1948, on Monday 13th October 2025 at Noble Rot, Mayfair, as arranged by Alex Bridgeman of BFT fame.

While a decent colour, this is the palest of the four bottles I’m bringing.

Provenance is that the bottle was acquired at the Christie’s New York sale at the Rockerfeller Plaza on 14 October 2006 and carried by hand back to the UK.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

T1878. Orange, 20% opaque. Palate utterly of crisp orange marmalade, very long, light. Far past prime, but still a joy.

Needed 30 mins in the glass to really open up, lovely dry old fruit, good balance with a mid length finish. This did not have the sweetness of that you normal expect from modern Taylor’s it was a little more like Dow’s. a complete wine, very good, just a little too old for me, to make it excellent. Very Good Hon Mention

The oldest of the wines opened for this deep Taylor tasting. A bottle which had been recorked at Whitwhams in 1986 and which was acquired from a Christie's sale in New York in 2006.

1878 Taylor, opened at 18.30, decanted at 20.45 and served almost immediately. Tasted several times over the course of 2 hours. Orange amber colour with a pale green rim. Delicate almond nose, very elegant and perfumed. Delicate and elegant structure on the palate with tannins still showing in the poised fruit. Lingering cranberry and orange fruit. Really delicious! Delicate, but just gorgeous!!  93/100.
