Thursday 4th July - Election Night Special

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

On past (UK) election nights many of us have opened a bottle of Port and stayed up to watch the results come in.

Is anyone interested in a virtual tasting that night - with a theme of opening a Port from the year of a previous UK full parliamentary election?

Candidates for opening would be Ports from the following years: 2019, 2017, 2015, 2010, 2005, 2001, 1997, 1992, 1987, 1983, 1979, 1974 (you can have 2 bottles if you choose this vintage), 1970, 1966, 1964, 1959, 1955, 1951, 1950, 1945, 1935, 1931, 1929, 1924, 1923, 1922, 1918, 1910 (2 bottles), 1906, 1900, 1895, 1892, 1886, 1885, 1880, 1874, 1868, 1865, 1859, 1857, 1852, 1847, 1841, 1837, 1835, 1832/1833

Anyone interested in being online and posting tasting notes and general derision of our electoral process that night?
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

I would be interested in joining for this. I think I've got a bottle of SQVP from 2005 that would do the job...

Ah, dang. I'd be interested, but alas, I'm on holiday and didn't bring any VP with me. All l have is a 10yo and a 10yo white.

Day drinking on the 4th? Sure! Why not?

I have to ask, though... why 2 bottles for 1974 or 1910? Did you have 2 full parliamentary elections in both of those years?

(For the record, I did not watch anything last night. The entire concept of it was too depressing and I did not want to drink myself into oblivion because I have work to do today.)

Yep. Those two years are the only two occasions in the last 200 years that the UK has had two full parliamentary elections in the same calendar year.

And surely there might be a beer or two during the day on 4th July anyway, without us being a bad influence on you!

I can't think of any reason why an American might be drinking on that date in particular...

It's Independence Day! Or as you call it in the UK, Thanksgiving.

I would think that you would need 1 bottle for each member party of the coalition, wouldn't you?

Happy to join in but I'll be drinking champagne - usually 2 bottles or one mag. Doesn't matter where I am in the world I make sure I am in a hotel where I can get BBC and ice buckets on election night!

I’ll give you half bottles from two different shippers if you choose either of those years, but two bottles only if you choose 1974 or 1910.

You can open a magnum (or larger) if you choose a year when the elected parliament lasted 5 years.

This is now getting very complicated (again) however it's a distraction for any other sillyness that might appear on the night

I'm planning to open a 2005 Taylor Terra Feita and realised I have no idea how long I should decant it for. Any suggestions are more than welcome!

I’d give it a couple of hours and then you can sip it over the next 8-10 hours once the 10pm news starts and the exit polls are released.

Although I cannot vote for the UK General Election :( - I am always up for some heated politics discussion ( usual practice for Greeks). General Elections are always good excitement so count me in but may join in after 9pm.

I have opened something appropriate, and will decant it 7am tomorrow = Thursday 4th July 2024.

A tasting note will be posted in this thread, from which you will, doubtless, all guess it immediately.

Ah, I was anticipating we might have a Zoom or similar if someone has the ability to do that without time limits. I'd happily join one but don't have the ability to set one up!

JDAW’s blind (from a year of a UK general election, and a suitable one).

Opened yesterday evening; decanted 7am this morning; removed from cellar only a few minutes ago. Dark red, 70% opaque. Palate has smoke, heat, only a very little fruit and that red. Mid weight, the mid-palate lighter and more astringent than I had expected.

To be revealed at midnight.
