Taylor Single Harvest Tawny Tasting - 16 May 2024

Post by nac »

Am considering doing a tasting of all the Taylor Single Harvest Tawny releases (apart from the pre-1900 ones) and a few other 50YO+ things.

The bottles are all from my cellar and will be charged at whatever they originally cost me.

Proposed line-up:
  1. Taylor 50YO Golden Age (bt 2022)
  2. Taylor Single Harvest 1961
  3. Taylor Single Harvest 1964
  4. Taylor Single Harvest 1965
  5. Taylor Single Harvest 1966
  6. Taylor Single Harvest 1967
  7. Taylor Single Harvest 1968
  8. Taylor Single Harvest 1969
  9. Taylor Single Harvest 1970
  10. Taylor Single Harvest 1971
  11. Taylor VVO Platinum Jubilee Edition (bt 2022)
  12. Taylor VVO Coronation Edition (bt 2023)
To make this viable it needs 10-12 heads. For 10, cost per head is £265; for 12, £220.
Note that my preference is for this to be 10 rather than 12...

Venue will be B&F, Red Room, Thursday 16th May 2024.

Attendees:
  1. NAC (availability confirmed)
  2. CPR (availability confirmed)
  3. PhilW (availability confirmed)
  4. MPM (availability confirmed)
  5. GEAG (availability confirmed)
  6. MartinC (availability confirmed)
  7. AHB (availability confirmed)
  8. GlennE (availability confirmed)
  9. MCharlton (availability confirmed)
  10. TC (availability confirmed)
Reserves:
  • Axel
  • Ralph
Current draft of the placemats.

I am game.

You are missing the 1863 from the line up... alas I can't offer to bring it.

Yes please. Definitely interested (subject to dates).
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

The comment above to Glenn applies more widely. If there are others who would like to come but can't do 2023Q4, then I'm happy for this to slide into 2024. Let me know...

Since this has revived, I would love to attend if held the week that I'm in London for the Graham vertical. Those dates would be roughly May 12-16, 2024. I could probably change either end of that by +/- one day if truly necessary, most easily at the beginning. (Current plan is to fly to London on Friday, 5/10 arriving mid-day Saturday, 5/11. Probably not in good shape to taste that evening. Then plan to fly to Porto on Thursday or Friday, May 16 or 17.)

I have and could contribute the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Very Very Old Tawny Port.

I also have and could contribute the 1964 Taylor Single Harvest, but for uniformity of experience across the Single Harvests I suggest that any of them that are contributed be used to replace those in your cellar, and that all of the ones opened for the tasting be the ones that come from your cellar.

To confirm, line-up will also include the VVO Coronation bottling.

Also, anticipation is that all the bottles will come from my cellar.

The tasting will now also include the Taylor VVO Coronation Edition. Assuming 12 attendees this means £220 per head for the wines.

I'm still awaiting confirmation of the 16th May date from B&F, but I'm assuming this is OK so could people confirm availability for this please (if you haven't already done so).

Note that this tasting will be for 12 people maximum.

Draft of the placemats added to the first post.

On the placemats is written, magnanimously, “Taylor”, but perhaps fairer would have been “Krohn”.

New abbreviation? "TK" for the Single Harvest Tawnies from 1962 to 1971 that Taylor purchased from Krohn?

Abbreviation reflects brand, which is how these were sold, hence correct.

I am unable to firmly commit to this unfortunately as I have some bookings. It is possible that I may still be able but in terms of fairness, if commitments are required now, and it is limited to 12, I should relinquish my place and demote to the reserves if possible. I think I have tasted them all on release or thereabouts and it would have been fantastic to taste them together. For what it is worth I would say the 1964 was the best for me, but that maybe biased by the fact I enjoyed my bottle over 3 nights in Sept 2015. The two nights before my wedding and the last glass of the evening of the big day… which was followed by my honeymoon in the Yeatman… good times!

Per this post, I believe there is an error in the first post and the placemats.

VVO bottled 2022 should be the Platinum Jubilee Edition
VVO bottled 2023 should be the Coronation Edition

From everything that I have heard, they are not the same wine. Based on a couple of reviews, it sounds to me like the Coronation Edition is an older and nicer Port.

Is it just me that finds the rising tide of excitement in one, as a tasting like this in which one is going to participate comes to fruition, a considerable pleasure in its own right? Especially where the tasting is, as here, going to significantly expand the boundaries of one’s knowledge. Following as I do the Julianic code of pre-loading on water, I don’t get post-tasting triste, so it is all upside.

Yes - this was an error. I'd copied the Jubilee line and forgot to change the description. Now fixed.

First post has been updated to reflect statements of availabilty for 16 May 2024.

There are a few still to respond, but please note that at this stage I won't be adding anyone to the list of attendees. The maximum for this will be 12, but ideally I'd like 10.

There will be a reserve list.
