That’s a very nice win, Justin. T77 is on top form at present.

Recently picked up a couple of halves of W77, which (when recording the purchase in my cellar spreadsheet) I then realised meant I could take this...

That is a truly satisfying picture

I'm available for the tasting where we drink all four bottles, it really would be the ultimate port geekery.

If the T77 is a late released stash, they will be re-corked and fine, but if it's an original release case, expect seepage - usually evidenced as crusting round the base of the capsules.

The original corks on this bottling were some of the worst ever deployed on VP

Out of curiosity, is there a way other than seepage to determine original release versus late release of the T77? I've seen a few for sale at auction online but never noticed a difference in labeling...

The Symingtons usually apply labels in the current format, resulting in quite a few styles for some wines, whereas the TFP are more inclined to use their historic styles. Some recent TFP labels are laser printed when the volume is small - the ink sits on the surface of the paper, rather than soaking into it - you can tell by looking at the label from an angle - the ink sits on the paper rather than beds into it.

Ahhhhh okay, I thought "late release" meant a later release in a the early 1980s when the T77 hit the market; I now understand that it means a modern bottling. Thanks for the clarification!

Late release bottles are those held by the producers in their lodges for several years, usually unlabelled. They are all bottled at the same time, but sometimes when the original corks are poor, the late released bottles get re-corked by the producers prior to sale.

So far it seems that I have been lucky. In addition to a small handful of bottles - perhaps 3 or 4 - that I have already consumed, I still have 4 x 1977 Taylor in my fridges that appear to be original release bottles and which do not appear to be seeping.

The way I see it, you have two options: either reduce the picture quality on your iPhone camera settings (you probably have the quality set to max or near max - as you should, but it does create problems when trying to upload to forums or message boards, as they usually have a size limit) or you first upload the pictures to a picture-hosting website (like imgbb or imgur, for example) and then post the direct links (so the pics actually appear, not just the link) in your post here.

I asked about this here. It seems the options are: a) resize the images on your computer to under 500KB before uploading; b) use a screen-shot function on your computer to do the same; or c) use the Tapatalk App to upload them.

I also use an iPhone. I email myself the picture I want to upload. When I send the email my phone asks me what size I want the image and basically gives me a choice of small, medium or large. I always choose small and find the image I receive by email loads up to the site perfectly well.

But I still have problems if I try to upload more than one image per post.

Macs and PCs both have software that can edit images for you fairly trivially. I'm only familiar with the process on a PC, but for that I just use Paint. It has an option to resize an image which is very straightforward.

Double depth racks are really useful for making better use of cellar space. Companies like Cranville will also make racks to whatever pitch you specify between the bottles. The vast majority of wine and port bottles are less than 85mm in diameter, but the standard pitch of wine racks is usually 96 or 98mm, so there's scope for squeezing more bottles in with a tighter rack pitch.

You are talking to the man with three cellars. He has managed to overcome the challenge of running out of storage space without slowing down the pace at which he buys wine and Port.

It’s really pleasing to see Quevedo out “in the wild”, as it were, rather than limited to special interest groups. It also happened to me, recently: I went round to a friend’s for dinner; he said he’d had a bottle of white Port that he’d been meaning to open for ages; I was a bit worried that it might be the Chip Dry but it turned out to be the Quevedo one.

Case of Warre 1977
Still, incredibly, I think for over ten years now, the most frequently seen VP at auctions in the UK..

..and for that reason, it tends to sell at less than full weight. Pre-pandemic it was going for £600-£750 for a dozen, hammer; since then, prices for all collectibles have gone utterly insane..

Still, I've just secured a half case of Sandeman '75 VP - a missing mainstream VP from my cellar - at a very modest - long shot price..
