Yesterday I had a festive lunch and a festive dinner but I forgot do document what we drank. Most of us were producers so there were lots of soon-to-be-released wines, mostly unlabelled.

Wow. In 2005 I was actually living in London, as an undergrad.

On a side note: I never understand this "It was still a big success but we decided to close" reasoning. It's a shame that a venue with almost half a century of service just closes down like that.

I use a Thermapen in the kitchen. It is fast and reliable. I believe that mine is a Mk IV. The current Thermapen One claims to be accurate within 0.5 degrees F (0.3 degrees C). Is it really that accurate? I don't know. When I'm smoking a brisket, the difference between 200 degrees and 200.5 degrees...

Those are some very nice wines. Surprised to see a Quinta das Bágeiras there, they're not very well known wines outside of Portugal but they are excellent.

^^ I think there are 50 white and 65 red varieties, with 64 of those reds being allowed in Port (sorry Pinot Noir, you're only good enough for Douro DOC sparkling wine).

I had a nice dinner yesterday at Kraneman's Quinta do Convento. Standouts were their 30yo and a 2015 LBV. Kraneman are unfortunately often overlooked but their tawnies are excellent, in my opinion.

I've yet to fully read the articles (they're open in my browser, waiting for a good time to do so), but I must say that Paul Symington and his family aren't exactly your typical "Douro farmers" that he mentions in the article. Their interests aren't necessarily the same as my interests.

Agreed. I use a single sheet of muslin (thank you, AHB), and it's always enough. A little cloudiness doesn't bother me, and it's better than a subpar flavour.
