I am waiting for the time that someone in the Douro goes completely rogue and makes a Vinho Fortificado de Portugal which falls outside the scope of the IVDP. Almost as if it was a family reserve which hadn't been registered and recorded... AFAIK, you can't, all wine spirit (aguardente) in the Dour...

Yes, that's the one! In that document, there are 64 Tinto and 46 Branco that are authorized for Port. Plus an additional 1 Tinto and 4 Branco that are only authorized for Douro wines. I honestly think the business model for vintage Port has to change so that less is made, a lot less is released 2 years after harvest and most of the production is held back, matured by the producers and sold 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 years after the harvest. I use a Thermapen in the kitchen. It is fast and reliable. I believe that mine is a Mk IV. The current Thermapen One claims to be accurate within 0.5 degrees F (0.3 degrees C). ^^ I think there are 50 white and 65 red varieties, with 64 of those reds being allowed in Port (sorry Pinot Noir, you're only good enough for Douro DOC sparkling wine).

I had a nice dinner yesterday at Kraneman's Quinta do Convento. Standouts were their 30yo and a 2015 LBV. Kraneman are unfortunately often overlooked but their tawnies are excellent, in my opinion.

I've yet to fully read the articles (they're open in my browser, waiting for a good time to do so), but I must say that Paul Symington and his family aren't exactly your typical "Douro farmers" that he mentions in the article. Their interests aren't necessarily the same as my interests.
