I was wondering,

the sandeman's and the rebello 77 we had at a tasting was slightly cloudy.

coudl it have simply been too cold?

like how olive oil turns cloudy when you stick it in the fridge.

Vintage port does go cloudy if you stick it in a fridge (I know this from personal experience). However, it quickly stops being cloudy once it starts to warm up and is usually perfectly clear at cellar temperature.

I would guess that it was more likely that the bottles weren't cleaned quite enough and there was still a bit of fine sediment stuck to the sides of the bottles which simply got shaken off and into the port on the subway trip.

What would be the recommended way to clean out a bottle?

I stuck a little water in there and shook it with all my life till my face was red,

then i repeated again with some red wine.

That would normally do the trick. The only other way you can be sure is to use a bottle brush.
