Is there in etiquette about singletons?

Anything to do with Port.

Is there in etiquette about singletons?

Post by LGTrotter »

I have a growing number of single bottles of port, where I generally had two or three of one of one wine. I can't quite bring myself to drink them.

Do I just lay into them or hang on to an increasing number of wines I feel I can't drink?

I think I answered my own question right there. This thread can be considered rhetorical.

Firstly, do you want me to fix the title of the thread before you are consigned to that place?

Secondly, yes, there is an etiquette that must be followed. Once he has more than six singletons of a standard that a gentleman would consider worthy of sharing with friends he is obliged to do just that. Line 'em up, we are on our way to Appleshire

Are they widely available?

If you have one left of that rare bottle, save it. When there is a vertical or a horizontal tasting into which that rarity would fit perfectly, do the right thing.

But those that can be found reasonably easily — e.g., a big shipper’s 1980 — should be drunk.

Well most of them are from the sixties and seventies and while widely available I am not sure that I might not rather buy a case of youngsters rather than buy a couple or a few old 'uns.

Exactly my thoughts. Keep the oddballs for verticals or horizontals, but don't fret over the mainstream '77s, '80s, '83s etc. If the last bottle is so fantastic you need to buy more, you can. Otherwise, you can opt for younger stuff.

My thoughts as well, perhaps with the caveat that one might wish to perform the replacement exercise for a big shipper's 1980s Port prior to consuming the last bottle in your possession.
