I notice that Sainsbury's are selling a TTD 1999 VP (Symington) instead of the previous TTD 2003 VP (Symington) in our local store. In regard to providing an experience that will encourage people to try more port, I applaud the move to offer a slightly older VP under the premium own-label; 2003 may be the better vintage, but while 1999 is a lesser vintage it should hopefully be better current drinking, and I imagine most people buying a bottle at Sainsbury's will be intending to open in the short term. Has anyone tried it yet?

I haven't tried it, but I also noticed this in our local Sainsbury's and relieved them of a bottle for scientific purposes!

Curious if the cork is branded with a name other than Sainsbury's?

Sym VP's sold by Sainsbury are normally branded "Vintage Port" + the year on the cork.

I don't know of any 1999 vintage from any of the Symington's main shipping names so I would speculate - and it is only my speculation - that this will be a single quinta wine.

I suspect that it correct. Given events of recent years it could be a Cockburn or Martinez SQVP.

Since my son was born this year, could I trouble any of you guys to get three bottles for me and exchange next time I am in the UK?

I was planning to wait for the 25% off for 6 or more before buying; will happily pick some up for you before that if you would prefer. Since it has only just appeared, I'm hoping it won't disappear again any time soon.

To me this didn't bear comparison with the Grahams's Crusted 2003 and 2004 between which it was bookended (available at the same sort of price). Too much burn (which seemed to increase after a day) when even on a virtual pop and pour, the Graham's was silky smooth-and got more so after a day. So I'll be be looking to restock on the Graham's when the next 25% offer comes around as this is rapidly becoming my everyday Port.

Chapeau-I believe you've solved this minor mystery Mr Holmes; the TTD '99 is one and the same as the Ck SQVP!

Yes, at that price (I bought some other wine too) - Axel's last reply seemed to want them purchasing asap, rather than waiting for potential future offers (understandable with xmas a long way off), so I picked them up. (will keep them myself if any issue ofc)

Related question: I bought a bottle of Sainsbury's TTD 1999 VP this morning. I presume it will need to be decanted like any other vintage port, but I'm surprised that the, rather elaborate, label doesn't say so. Is it simply a case of Messrs Sainsbury not wanting put off potential purchasers, or what?

It's not an LBV port, is it? If it is, then, again, the label doesn't say so.
