I was just thinking that during the 1987 storm I was working in a country pub (oh the glamour!) and I was given to drinking cheap ruby, cockburn I think. Hardly the most auspicious of beginnings but I do remember drinking port, driving part of the way home and having to walk the rest of the way due to fallen trees. All these years later and tonight I find myself drinking Tesco 1994. Not much of a storm yet...

For those of our correspondents outside the UK the weather has driven us all hysterical again, or at least you might think so from the media coverage. I thought about meaningless drivel for this one but decided on here due to the tenuous port connection.

I was sipping on a glass of Delaforce 1977 last night - perfect fireside port. Plenty of spice and liveliness.

The storm didn't reach our part of the country until 6am, but was quite spectacular to watch with trees being bent parallel to the ground. Luckily no serious damage was done, but our house does seem to have sprung a leak somewhere that we'll need to get fixed.

It got a bit blowy here in the small hours, but hardly a gale, and that was it - yet it was supposed to come right over the top of us - no damage, nothing - strange..

I remember the '87 storm well - I drove down to Gatwick and back in the middle of it, dodging falling trees at Sevenoaks and collapsing motorway signs at Dartford. I only realised how bad it was when it got light, and had some difficulty getting home due to the number of trees that had fallen since I set off.

During this little wimp of a storm I was drinking Cockburn '55 - itself the wimp of the vintage..
