Another Christmas Day gone with too much food eaten and very little alcohol consumed. Still a good day though. Merry Christmas everyone!

Our Christmas days were almost identical, with the only difference being the alcohol consumption
Merry Christmas!

Christmas eve was shared, amongst others, with my sister-in-law's sister's boyfriend, whose surname is Taylor and was born in '55; so the choice of bottle was easy! It showed very well indeed..
Drinking on Xmas day was quite modest at lunchtime, as I had to drive later; but a bottle of Haut Bages Liberal '86 more than compensated in quality for lack of quantity.
Xmas night I served behind the bar of my local pub (as I have done, on every Xmas night since 1981; and the only time I ever serve behind a bar)
I always take a decanter with me, and had planned to take a Cockburn 20yr; but I had some suspicions about the veracity of some bottles recently collected from Strakers, as the tops of all the capsules had been removed. Suspecting that the bottles might have been re-used for home wine-making, rather than what it said on the label (Cockburn & Campbell (Edinburgh) Crusting port, bottled 1979) I popped one, fearing the worst. But no, the cork (which broke up badly) said it was a Quarles Harris 1979 port.
More to the point, it was really nice; and still with a little mileage for further maturation.
I am now cooking up the wax pot to put new capsules on the remaining five bottles..

There's a reasonable amount of '79 around. I know that there was a '79 Malvedos as that was the first port that I ever bought and drank in the Douro. I'm not sure what else was made that vintage; it's rare but not impossible to get hold of.
