Hello Everybody!

Dear Friends,
Over the last days I have spent a lot of time here, reading through the many posts and enjoyed this interesting forum.
Since 1994 I spent every year some time in Oporto and I started to enjoy port wine tremendously. Last year I rented a car and drove several days through the Douro Valley, just after the harvesting. A fantastic experience. The whole region smelled like wine...
Now I am sitting here on a small tropical island and dream about all the interesting small port wine shops in Oporto... unfortunately the Cayman Islands are some of the worse places for port wine lovers... very limited offers at very high prices...
Well, if anybody of you ever comes to visit Grand Cayman - please let me know!
Greetings,
Christian

Welcome to the boards Christian,

To be fair, you have plenty of sun and clear waters to enjoy. Can you imagine swimming off the dirty waters of Coney Island when it's 0 degrees out?

Trade offs =)

Hi Christian, welcome to TPF! I know all about living in a country where finding port isn't exactly easy.

I doff my hat to the man who drinks 5% of the port landed in Grand Cayman.

Derek: you and I need a trip to the Vatican. We’ll sit in St Peter’s Square and have a three-bottle picnic: that should get us over that day’s 5% threshold.

Do you know the port consumption of the Vatican? Who knows what they serve with the communion bread!

Excellent idea. In late July I am going to St Maarten for two weeks - research is required to determine what consumption is required to attain the 5% threshold there. This could turn into a new sport.

Isn't ST Maarten close to the Caymans?

In America, 100 years is a long time. In Europe, 100 miles is a long ways.

So no. They are both in the Caribbean, but they are over 1000 miles apart (probably closer to 1200). Grand Cayman is south of the western half of Cuba. Sint Maarten is east of the British Virgin Islands, which are east of Puerto Rico.
