Axel,
Can you put me down as tentative. I need to work out logistics, but I should be able to make this as I should be heading through London on my way to Oporto that week. I'll keep you updated as things progress. thanks

I ll save you a seat. Good to have police protection at the tasting. I do not know wether you heard the stuff going on around the pirates in Africa, but to arrest the pirates legaly on a german frigate you need to have policemen on board as well. We could bomb and destroy poop on our own, but not arrest any. That makes sense, doesnt it?

If you put me in the backseat of your plane, does that count as "policeman onboard?" If so, they we can fly around and take care of those pesky little critters

Oh yeah, can we take a small detour and fly into the Douro for a visit. In the jet it won't take long to get there and I'm sure we can figure out a way to stash some Port on board to quench our thirst after all our hard work

The ammo box of the cannons holds exactly 2 cases of 6 btl. ea of Vesuvio (thanks to the Symingtons to keep these measurements in mind when they constructed the case).

Very nice of the Symington's to take that into consideration...now if only they could design a case that fits into the saddle bag of my police motorcycle

I managed to bring 6 bottles of Chateauneuf du Pape back from france in my throw over (soft) panniers along with what little clothing I had deemed appropriate for a 2,500 mile 6 day trip! I am sure whatever model the authorities provide for you is somewhat larger than my 600cc sports bike!

Would there be any chance of replacing some of the Palantino with
Chevalier Open (the typeface I think is currently used for the Warre logo)?
(And as a Mac user, shouldn't you be using Helvetica rather than Arial?

)

That’ll cost me $20. I’ll PM what fonts I already have.

I would not say wrath; with reference to the elaborate discussion in the preparations for the Vargellathon I was rather confused and feared initially my English was not good enough to understand the deeper meaning behind the thread. After Alex and you kindly agreed that you also felt it went a bit beyond I was relieved and as far as I remember openly admitted that these sort of technical outbursts should be more controlled.
Again I am very happy that Julian and you work out the placemates. Apologies, I am a bit too focussed on trying/drinking wines (do also not read a lot, too much focused on practical application

) and do avoid looking into these very necessary things.
Especially since they make the tasting so much nicer.
With regards to the Warre vertical I must say I found the Arial issue funny, since I have a "Julian" at work (though I admit not in the same league as him ) who made me change to use Arial (used New Times Roman before which now I admit is horrible).
Hope Julian is now not to cross with me
Wolfgang

The friend has said that he won't be able to confirm until much later in the year (September) and has therefore suggested that we offer his place to others but he will ask if he turns out to be free and can join us.

I've been contemplating a trip to the UK, for port drinking among other reasons, but sadly this is too close to a holiday. Will keep my eyes on your tastings, though

How about we will have a Pink Port side tasting before the meal on Oct 2nd. I could supply the Quevedo and would ask other participants to bring one, too. I guess, a Pink tasting hasnt been organised yet and it wont justify the effort for a single tasting anyway.
Comments, please

Yep, but we still also need to check if we can get the Warre 1950. It maybe a bit academic (supposed according to uncle Tom not so good) but nevertherless.
Will update all shortly.

Not personally tasted, but Broadbent's comment is a classic: "smell and taste of asbestos filter pads"
Not a strong year, and one of MB's most damning notes ever - but I would like to include it if we could find a bottle - it might just surprise..

Well, I'm not sure about the appeal of the "smell and taste of asbestos filter pads' - but if an opening does present itself for this tasting, I'd be more than willing to fly over the pond to participate. I've always been interested in doing a Warre's vertical...

Ghandhi is noted as being wait listed on the first post - best check with Wolfgang or Axel first, as they are taking care of the attendance list.

Friends,
Many thanks for the invitation. I would be delighted to attend. My wife is likely to be "with child" for no more than two more weeks, which will make things a little hectic at home, but I hope that, with careful timing of my request, I will be able to get my card stamped.

Modern technology eh? Moore’s law and all that. When I was young it used to take nine months. Don’t know how they do it, like.

Updated by the addition of Hermann Stoeckmann.
Printing:
The Manual wrote:The day before the tasting print the mats using a toner printer.
- Ensure that ‟No automatic page scaling” (or equivalent) is checked in the print dialogue box. (Automatic page scaling can be very wrong, scaling to invisible and irrelevant artefacts in the PDF.)
- On some Konica Minolta printers, and perhaps others, checking ‟Choose paper size by PDF page size” means the output is very small, a mirror image, and on paper of the wrong size. This is not good. On other printers this setting can be useful experiment as necessary.
- Print single-sided obviously duplex wouldn’t work.
- Use toner not ink, as a single drop of wine or water causes ink to smudge.
- Print onto brilliant white paper of the correct size. In the US prefer 96 bright paper to the slightly-yellow 92.

Axel and Wolfgang, if you don’t have access to a A3
laser printer then I’d be happy to arrange the printing as we have one at work.
Julian; is it just me, or is the spacing in the Optima numbers really uneven? Perhaps manually reduce the spacing between 5 and 2, 5 and 5, 7 and 0, and 7 and 5?

Oh, I thought that was my renderer. Will try a different typeface for you. Suggestions sans-serif, stylish, not ornate?
