What instruments do you play / own?

Having just seen that Jacob is a Double Bass player, which is twice as good as me, a single Bass player. I thought it would be interesting to see what other people play, if at all. It doesn't matter how competent you are (speaking as a musical incompetent myself) just what you play. Or even what you would like to play or whether you consider it better for the World that you keep away from such things.

Starting off, I own and can partially play the following:

Piano;
Mouth Organ;
Electric and Acoustic Guitar;
Bass Guitar

As I said, fairly incompetent at all of them.

I regret that I lack the talent for such things.

I can make a deep whistling noise with an empty port bottle.

At various times in my life I have played all of the following:

Piano
Trombone (both Tenor and Bass)
Tenor Recorder (I have rather large hands which makes it practical)
Bass Guitar
Saxaphone

Those are listed in approximate order of retained capability. I could probably still play either Trombone or Piano... I was quite good on the Trombone through college, where I played bass in the band and the 1st tenor in the Jazz Band. They invited me to play in the Orchestra, but I declined because they wanted far too much of a rehersal/practice/lessons commitment for my taste. I was a bit of a natural on the Trombone, and I think it frustrated my band director (who was also a trombone player) to no end. He wanted me to be great... I was content merely being very good since it required almost no effort. (St. Olaf College, for the record, is somewhat famous for its music programs. I was very honored to receive the Orchestra invitation, but knew I wasn't dedicated enough.)

Tenor Recorder is something I picked up after college when I wanted something musical to pass the time. Some friends had a renaissance "band" and it looked fun so I practiced with them for a while. I was never good enough to play in any sort of performance, though... it was just a casual hobby.

Bass Guitar and Saxaphone were both experiments in high school. I was never really any good at either, though picking the Bass back up probably wouldn't be too hard.

Oh, and I also play Rock Band. Does that count? :lol:

I had a go at Saxophone - it was a disaster. I blew a lot of raspberries.

Got a spanish guitar
a regular acoustic one
and a cheap electric guitar.

I should play more often, haven't picked it up in a year.

Oh dear!this has rather highlighted my main vice. I stopped counting when I got to 100 (though most of them are folk instruments I’ve picked up on holiday). These are some of the fipple flutes which are now in a filing cabinet behind my desk:

Though most of my collecting is now aimed at flageolets.

In terms of playing, the bass has become my main instrument, though I sometimes play the saxophone and piano. I sometimes play the recorder a bit, and mess around on the French and English flageolets when I have the chance.

Also, isn’t TBird another bass player? If so, then the bass is obviously the instrument of choice for the Port drinker!

On the grounds that TBird was originally known as TBirdBass and it has nothing to his choice of beer or fish, yes, he's a bass player.

The guitars are currently my favourite things, they are next to me right now. I am getting more and more fond of the acoustic. It's a Fender Gemini II, it has a lovely tone and a really nice feel. I bought it second hand for £60 and it's a beauty. Oh, and it's loud.

The electrics are both Squier Affinity and Fender copies. The bass is a Jazz Bass copy and the guitar is a Strat copy. They both play well if only there was a musician around to play them.

Piano is a Technics electronic piano with Bechstein sample voices.

All of the above have been tackled by proper musicians whilst in my house and they all sound great in the right hands.

ah excellent,

i've got a ibanez acoustic that's incredibly warm and offers great depth.

my electric is also a strat copy .. but i never play it anymore because the acoustic just sounds so much better in my apartment.

No - I'm a frustrated bassist turned guitarist. I should point out that I played guitar before bass but always wanted to play bass. I'm stll fairly rubbish at both.

I think a more accurate description is probably frustrated musician turned bassist :-)

I used to play the Tenor Horn and the French Horn and can turn my hand to most brass instruments apart from the trombone. I only play these days when the children persuade me to get the French Horn down from the loft. The lips are a bit shot but the will still exists.

I don't want to be accused of hiding my light under a bushell so will come clean and admit that, with about 30 minutes to refresh my skills, I can perform a pretty good chopsticks on both piano and electric organ (although not simultaneously).
