Thursday 27th March 2025 - Virtual Tasting

Posted: 14:27 Mon 09 Dec 2024
by nac
Following general enjoyment of the event on 5th December, I propose that we have another go on Thursday 27th March 2025 (2000 kick-off), using Teams or Phil’s Zoom (if an account is available).

Link to be sent by email closer to the time.

Maybe with more of a theme next time?
How about something like Taylor or Graham LBVs? Relatively easy for people to get cheaply, and could potentially do some sample distribution in advance. Other suggestions please...

Theme is Symington or Taylor Fladgate LBVs.

Yes, please.

(For now) I only have Graham 17 that fits that particular theme. If we widen it to all SFE and TFP LBVs then I have Warre 07/08/09, Cockburn 15, Dow 16, and Fonseca 18.

Yes please. I have some older Taylor's LBV (from the 1990's), so I would most likely open one of those. The only Graham's LBV I have is 2013 through 2015 and that's too young for me.

Good idea - let's go for SFE and TFP LBVs. Everyone should be able to find one of those!

Others added.

Feedback from previous session sought.
Was Teams OK or should we look to use Zoom (or something else)? If Zoom, does anybody have a paid account? If not, we could use the free version but would have to keep re-joining as the meeting time expires.

Teams was fine for me Neil. Especially once I selected the correct view.

I was perfectly happy using Teams, but I'm also willing to switch if that's the consensus.

Teams worked for me, although we might need a little group-help session partway through to adjust screen views and stuff. There must be a way to have the speaker large on the screen and other participants thumbnails around the edge - but I use Teams so infrequently with large groups that I haven’t yet found how to do this.

But I’m also happy to use Zoom, if someone has a paid account we can use.

Teams seemed okay for me, but if someone has a paid Zoom account, that's fine as well. Google video works well if someone has a paid account, otherwise you're limited to an hour.

Phil - many thanks for the offer.

My preference is to go for Zoom. It’s a bit more intuitive and always worked well for the tastings we did during COVID.

So, we’ll be using Phil’s full-fat Zoom account.
Suspect the link will be emailed a couple of days in advance.

Yup - no reason why not.

We have a theme, sufficient interest and technology is sorted.

Alas I can no longer do this date.

I will however be listening to Verdi’s Requiem which will be appropriately sorrowful for missing a port tasting.

Just a reminder that this is coming up. I'll be opening a 2016 Dow.

If I'm converting the time zones correctly, we're starting at 1:00 pm Pacific. That'll work for a bit, then I'll have to log out as I have a meeting from 2:00 - 3:00 pm Pacific. I can re-join after that meeting assuming people are still around.

I have a 2015 Graham to open.

A timely reminder - thanks Miguel. I hadn’t put this in my diary…

I’m going to open one of
  • Taylor 2000 in magnum
  • Warre Bottle Aged 1982
  • Warre Bottle Aged 2011
I’m leaning towards the last of these just because I’m curious to know how this best style of LBV has come out from the best vintage so far of the 21st century.

Will update the attendee list and liaise with Phil re the Zoom tomorrow.

Think I’m going for Graham LBV 2008. Random bottle picked up recently for not very many £s. Or maybe Warre 2007…

Neil - would make sense to edit your previous post and remove your email address, otherwise you'll eventually start to receive a bucketload of spam.

I’m definitely going to open the 2011 Warre Traditional Bottle Aged LBV. I really want to taste what it’s like. I think I’ll decant it in the morning to give it 10-12 hours to open up.

I bought 7 bottles. This is the first 1. I’m very, very glad I have 6 more, it’s that good.

But I’m not going to open another 1 tonight. When the decanter is empty I’ll switch to a tawny.
