NV Niepoort Crusted 2014

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Bottled in 2014. Opened at 16.00, decanted at 06.00 and drunk at 18.00.

Deep red colour with a charcoal tone and a wide rim, appearing to be very early in the drinking window. A lovely nose of sweet black cherry fruit, deliciously floral. Gently tannic on entry; quite restrained but with the tannins being wonderfully fine-grained. The fruit shows later and develops beautifully. A fantastic black cherry aftertaste and a black liquorice finish which is very impressive and very long. This is a delicious wine, early in its drinking life and possibly just coming out of a closed phase with slightly dirty fruit. Served blind, this was guessed to be Vesuvio 1997. 91/100. Tasted 12-Aug-20. Decanted 12 hours.

Tasted at the mid-COVID re-opening of the Boot & Flogger.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
