Opened at 22.00, decanted with very little sediment at 10.30 and drunk at 19.00.

Black in colour; no, darker than black. This wine is stupidly black for a 46 year old Port and has a rim which is narrow to medium in width. Black liquorice and sweet floral perfume on the nose, giving a fine complexity. Black cherry on the palate, spicy with a little cracked pepper and liquorice root. The powerful acidity shows as a slight menthol burn on the aftertaste, but this is quickly replaced by a delicious finish of Bertie Bassett black liquorice wheels. This is a big and delicious Port but not one which is well balanced. Young, punchy and still gently tannic. Tasted alongside the Fonseca 1977, the latter was the better wine. 90/100. Decanted 8½ hours.
