Re: 1983 Noval Nacional
Something not right on the nose. Almost, but not quite, TCA. Didn't improve over the evening.
Palate better than nose, but very light.
Disappointing, but not really surprised by this given NN performance from other close vintages.

Brownish. Muddy.
Lots of pontefract cake on the nose.
Maybe a bit less than fruity on the mid-palate. The NN figs did appear albeit fleetingly.
Finish congruent with nose. Long and sweet.
I did not dislike it, which is not at all to say that I thought it was good. I am however glad to have tried it, in a group environment and at a very heavily discounted rate. The market price (£950) is utterly preposterous, perhaps thirty times what it is worth.

NN83. Just no. Acidic with brown sugar.
Don’t drink at the price. Don’t drink if cheap. Don’t drink if free.

E: Cloudy/brown in the glass.
N: A very strange musky liquorice note on the nose.
P: The mustiness on the nose did not translate to the palate, nor did much else to write about.
Such a shame.

Re: 1983 Noval Nacional
Mature bronze colour, turbid; 40% opaque. Sweet liquorice on the nose; gentle orange on the palate with generous acidity and a dose of bitter orange oil. The acidity keeps the wine balanced. A gentle lemon marmalade finish of good length. Despite its appearance, the wine is fully mature and drinking perfectly well - it's just disappointingly light and ephemeral. 86/100. 25-May-23. Decanted 1½ hours.

Not that unpleasant to drink if you didn't look at it, but the appearance was terrible. 90% of LBVs at this age would show better. Very poor.

40% opacity, cloudy brown. Tea leaves and tobacco on the nose. Lacking structure and integration, gentle heat and acidity, some citrus fruit - grapefruit.
