2009 Warre Colheita (bottled 2020)

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Bottled in 2020. The Port offered on BA268 from Los Angeles to Heathrow. This appeared to be the second glass poured from a bottle likely opened on the outbound flight, about 12 hours earlier.

A rich, deep red-mahogany colour, 70% opaque. On the nose the wine has a lovely praline and hazelnut sweetness; on the palate there is more fruit, dried figs and sweet dates. The wine has a powerful acidity which keeps the sweetness in check and provides a lively palate, adding a touch of orange oil to the flavours. The orange oil dominates the aftertaste and delivers an element of the intense, long-lasting bitter-sweet fruit finish. This is a delicious Port, much more of an uncompromising power-house than I normally associate with the house of Warre. This bottle is showing considerably better than one I had 5 months earlier. 93/100. Drunk 31-Oct-22.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
