50 Year Old Tawnies (and potential friends) - 2023 (or later)

Post by M.Charlton »

Hi Everyone,

I have been meaning to organise a tasting for more than a little while now, but have struggled with deciding on a theme (and I still haven’t… - see below).

A few producers have released tawnies falling into the new 50 year old category, and I thought it would be good to try them together (provided enough TPFers are interested in this style of Port…). So far, I’m only aware of Taylor, Sandeman, Kopke and Quinta do Vallado having made their releases, though I guess some of the usual suspects are to follow. Depending on the number of 50 y.o. tawnies eventually available, we could go with a tasting focussed on these (option A).

Alternatively (option B), if the number of such tawnies remains small I was thinking we could bring Vintage Ports, from the same producers as for the 50 y.o. tawnies, which have around 50 years of bottle age on them (staggering the tasting accordingly).

Please let me know what you think about a tasting based on one of options A or B (of course, feedback/modifications appreciated if both options are non-ideal!).

In terms of a date, I’m thinking late 2023 to account for releases from more producers.

Late 2023 sounds good to me… may have to adopt or contribute but have time to find something appropriate.

Count me in! Option A / B prob depends on how many 50s appear, as you say.

Great idea, provided we can get enough of them.
50+ year old VPs we can do more easily, but if we can get a number of the 50 year tawnies together that would be good.

Good idea - count me in. Either option good.

Could it include a few 50yo whites? I have some of the Quevedo.

Quinta do Mourao has a 50 Year Old White, but their Tawny is a 60.
DR has a 50 Year Old White, but it doesn't say "50" on the label just "Very Old White" because it pre-dates the category.
Quinta de Prelada has a 50 Year Old White for sure... I don't know about a Tawny.
Quinta do Portal has a 50 Year Old Tawny but I'm not sure it has been released commercially yet.
Vieira de Sousa has a 50 Year Old White, but as with DR it is only labeled as a "Very Old White" because it pre-dates the new category.

There are no doubt others, but these are the ones that I can remember from my last couple of Port Harvest Tours.

The SL60yt is no longer available, but there is now(ish) an SL50yt as well as the SL50yw, and it is excellent.

I think Palmer and Maynard also have 50yo bottlings. Also interested in attending.

Thanks for the additional info, all. It’s very much looking like we will be able to do option A (including some 50 y.o. white tawnies sounds like a grand idea). I will collate the list of what’s available into the first post once I’m front of a proper computer, rather than my mobile.

Yes please.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I would like to attend - there are a lot of releases pending so we could put together a strong line-up by the time the date is fixed.

I’d be interested, too, if there is space.

(An option C could be tawnies that have spent 50 years in the bottle ;-) ).

I have seen photographic evidence that Butler Nephew has a new 50 Year Old Tawny Port, too.

By the time of your tasting, Symington and Rozes should have bottled, too...

I'm now aware of 12 bottlings (the first post has been edited to list them). If I've missed some, please let me know.

Also, does anyone know if we are to expect releases from any of the other houses anytime soon?

Quite keen on this

Add
Devesa 50 tawny and White
Quevedo 50 year white
Palmer 50

anyone with stocks of Tawny will join the bandwagon

Need to check a couple of the bottles listed as they may be same but rebranded
