NV Cabral Tawny 40YO Royal Reserve

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Tasted at JDAW's Cellar Reduction Dinner on 16th February 2022.

Porto Cabral 40YO Royal Reserve Tawny port from Serafim Cabral Lda, Vila Nova de Gaia, Oporto; estimated to have been bottled in the late 1970s.

Light honey brown with a very fine haze, 30% opaque despite the haze. Soft clover honey on the nose with a little lemon in the background. Almost flavourless on entry! The flavours arrive on the mid-palate with coffee and grapefruit sweetened with a little burnt sugar. A very strange rubber band tone on the aftertaste and rubbery finish with some cinnamon drops coming through late. Very aged, dry and thin. 81/100. Drunk 16-Feb-22. Decanted 3 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
