A ‘soon to expire’ TAP travel voucher is taking the whole family to Lisbon for a few days in early April. (Porto was vetoed!)

Any advice on family friendly (boys aged 13 & 11) things to do or places to eat.

Bonus point if it is somewhere that will also satiate my thirst for port!

I have only been to Lisbon for one afternoon but can highly recommend a trip to Pasteis de Belém for the best custard tart experience on the planet

Beware, though, the queues can sometimes be daunting!
But I concur, absolutely worth a visit. I used to live quite near.

I'm going to be in Lisbon later this year. If anyone has any restaurant recommendations for anything other than Pasteis de Belém (which is at the top of the list) then please be encouraged to put them in a reply.

Time Out market for casual dining, drinking and possibly even dancing. If you don’t know of it, it’s a bit like Spitalfields now is but more covered and with communal tables such that you can each eat from a different caterer. We loved it, as did the boys who had burgers to our Portuguese options. I then followed it all with cheese and Port from another caterer.

I sent them to Alex via WhatsApp (forgot I said I'd post them here), but I can retrieve them and post here if it's useful to more people.

The Time Out Market was chaotic but great. We loved it.

Our one night of up-market dining was at Canalha, which was fabulous but make sure you book at least a week ahead.

We stumbled across Tabernha da Baixa on Rua dos Franqueiros by accident, but loved it. We got away with not having a booking by turning up at 6.30pm and looking hungry but by the time we left they were turning people away at the door.

Make sure you visit all three branches of Garrafeira Nacional to see what they have in their enomatic machines. They always have some rare and interesting things available by the (quite expensively priced) glass.

Avoid eating anywhere on Praça do Comércio. I had the most revolting Tosta Mista imaginable from one of the tourist trap cafés there. At least in St Marks Square in Venice you get served decent quality food at eye-watering prices. Not so much in Lisbon’s main square.

I'm having a hard time imagining what a revolting tosta mista even looks/tastes like.
But yes, avoid Terreiro do Paço/Praça do Comércio (except for sightseeing).

That was the trap I fell in to. How can you get a toasted cheese and ham sandwich wrong?

Oh boy, they managed it. It was not just inedible, a bite of it made my stomach churn. Very slightly toasted bread (on the outside) with what tasted like melted margarine poured on the top. Jeez!

Good god.
