2003 Niepoort

Post by winesecretary »

2 hour decant

Still very dark, 90% opaque, red rim. Glass-staining.

A little dumb on the nose but lots of swirling reveals stewed plum and chocolate.

Fabulous burst of ripe dark fruit - loganberry/ blackcurrant/ blackberry on the palate and then a nasal-passage-cleansing burst of acidity and a long luscious finish with beautifully balanced fruit and fine-grained but still very present tannins.

This is not fully integrated, but it's starting to be quite exciting.

Consumed (in part) 21/1/22

Will report back as this is the weekend's bottle.

No lighter. Nose similar to before but showing a bit more touriga nacional blueberry.

Palate still exuberantly fruity, and it's more coherent than yesterday, but on the basis of this bottle it's ten years away from prime drinking window.

Balance is really very good, though.
