Port Vintages, Second Edition
Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
It seems that it’s only me who is interested. Hence their number might not be zero, but won’t be far above that.

Yes! It's happening!
Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
Pre-order placed. Awesome.
Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
My pre-order went in at 11:18 this morning. I've been looking for the postman ever since but he hasn't arrived yet!
Good luck with the new edition, Julian. I am sure it will be fabulous.

I'm not seeing a place to order the 2nd Edition. Can someone share a link please?
Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
Sent today:
In 2018, after ten years of work, Port Vintages was finished. The book was done: I could emerge from my cave and discover who else lived in the house — wife! three children! cats! Who knew?
Well, I believed it was done. The printing was beautiful, but the distributor’s packing was a disaster. Much hassle followed.
Then readers wrote to me. The book was 390k words: one person read it three times before sending a detailed critique. Others sent new information, some of which contained clues leading to yet more. And, deeply regretted, there was an error of mine: in July 2012 I had tasted Martinez 1948, yet it was missing from the book. {Looks at feet, contrite.} Mea culpa. It likely hurt me much more than you. Plus, of course, there was more new information, in 2018 unknown and unknowable.
So there must be a second edition. The first edition was described as “the definitive reference book on old Vintage Port” (George Sandeman), as “Wisden’s for drinkers of Vintage Ports” (Dominic Symington), and as “an essential work for any one interested in Vintage Port” (Richard Mayson). The second edition is all that, and more.
But sell + print + distribute is not my game. It is a task for a professional, and there was one natural choice for the job. Hence I’m extremely pleased that the Académie du Vin Library, founded by the late Steven Spurrier, has agreed to be the seller + printer + distributor of the second edition of Port Vintages.
And, already, Thunderbirds Are Go!: pre-order now. You will need a copy for the dining room, one for the cellar, two for each bedroom, one in every little room, and the same again for all your friends-and-relations. So pre-order lots!
The book is expected to be printed and ready for shipping early Autumn 2022.
An extra request. Many oenophiles didn’t know of this book at first publication. Please, my previous customers, also be my salesforce. Doubtless you know aficionados and connoisseurs who need to have the definitive book on Vintage Port. Please forward this email to them, prefixing sentences of high praise. You know them; please let them know.
Obviously, the PortVintages.com mailing list cannot be given to the AdVL. To be informed about progress with the book, about your pre-order, and about the AdVL’s other books, please subscribe to the AdVL mailing list.
Enjoy, both reading and drinking.

Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
Just received a promo email from Academie du Vin with a 10% off code.
Mildly irritating.

Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
Pretty common practice these days. If you buy something you've demonstrated interest in their products, so they give you a discount on your next purchase to encourage you to come back.
One of our licensees does that so aggressively that if you visit the site, log in, and put something in your basket, don't check out, and leave the site, you'll get an offer for a discount. Which you then go back and use for your original purchase.

No, this is an email offering The Book with a 10% discount.Glenn E. wrote: ↑18:50 Thu 31 Mar 2022Pretty common practice these days. If you buy something you've demonstrated interest in their products, so they give you a discount on your next purchase to encourage you to come back.

There's a 15% discount code, BTW. They just showed it to me when I first entered their website, for some reason.nac wrote: ↑20:20 Thu 31 Mar 2022No, this is an email offering The Book with a 10% discount.Glenn E. wrote: ↑18:50 Thu 31 Mar 2022Pretty common practice these days. Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
Help! What’s happened? In detail. Why unfair? What do you want me to do?
Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
Just a minor irritation - don't think you can do anything but perhaps highlight to Academie du Vin that their marketing could alienate people. Having placed an order for multiple purchases, to then receive a discount offer is a bit annoying
Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
Strangely inconsistent. They gave me a 15% offer when I looked at the site, so I was lucky.
Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition
The website had a SNAFU. Something meant to have been changed wasn’t, then was.

Do you get an indication of how sales are going?
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

(It isn’t actually a vote, except in the sense that I get 1 whole vote and everybody else gets 10⁻⁹ votes, but my vote will be made whilst heeding wise opinions received.)
I have also preordered. A potentially tense period now ensues until I find out which format of ‘new evidence marker’ was adopted…
