Double - decanted 0915. Cork came out cleanly, clear Noval Nacional branding. Room immediately filled with the scent of violets when I eased the cork out. Level into neck. A generous teaspoon of mainly quite fine sediment. Dregs confirm wine to be in good condition.

Pale, with orange rim. Rose hip and rose on the nose. A hint of coffee, later. On the palate this is light pretty cherry-orange port of no great distinction. When offered more I declined. It was better just after opening, I think.

Would you like some more Nacional?
I expected the Symington wines to top the bill the bill last night, but in the opposite order to that which emerged.

Taylor was better than I expected, and the Fonseca, which seemed to be fading fifteen years ago, is still exactly the same.

My last encounter with the NN80 was of a very pale wine, and this one seemed a little darker, but for a Nacional to get the wooden spoon without being obviously faulty is a very poor show..

One of the bigger noses for the evening - coffee notes for me. It was relatively hot but a quite nice, fruity palate. I then had a top up - it wasnt great. Honestly dont know what to think. Had it been priced like a regular 1980, I'd would have called it decent drinking. Unfortuantely it is not.

Orangey-red. Nose fell apart and became astringent. In the mouth, a touch of acid. Almost no fruit. Disappointing aftertaste. Really disappointing for what this is.

Red/orange rim – quite pale. Not much going on on the nose at the beginning, nor at the end of the evening. Unfortunately, I thought that the palate and the aftertaste didn’t have much going on, either, and that they stayed rather hot/acidic for the whole tasting.

Very light and evolved appearance, 30% opaque. A bizarre nose, of toffee and caramel with no sign of any fruit - even a little offensive! The wine manages a toffee / butterscotch nose and a coffee / cigar ash palate. Long finish of candied fruit but the unpleasant palate spoiled it for me. 78/100.
Drunk 20-Oct-21. Decanted 9½ hours.
