VWP - Quevedo Taste at Home - Garrafeira vs Colheita Port (Thu 9th Dec 2021)

Post by Doggett »

Tony and the VWP team have been working with Oscar to deliver some more online Quevedo tastings. This one looks unmissable with a rare chance to try some Garafeira Port. See the details and link below from the VWP site.

Quevedo Taste at Home - Garrafeira vs Colheita Port - Online Tutored Tasting
Follow the tasting on You Tube on 2nd December 2021 at 7pm
Packs will be delivered early October

Garafeira is a very rare style of Port and many Port lovers have never even heard of it, and even fewer have ever tasted one. Oscar has delved into his family's private cellars to bring you something really special. This wine has never been tasted by the public outside of his cellar.

Garrafeira is a special category of port. It is produced from grapes of a single-harvest and so carries a vintage year on the bottle: After ageing in cask for six years in cask, Quevedo bottled a small quantity of their 2000 and 1994 Port in glass demijohns so that the ageing continues in glass rather than cask. This type of ageing adds a unique character known as "cheiro has garrafa" meaning "savour or essence of the bottle". This helps to produce an elegant, smooth Port that is delicate, fresh and possesses great finesse.

The tasting will compare these rare ports to their Colheita (barrel-aged) counterparts so that you can see how they have evolved differently over the years.

The pack contains 90ml sample bottles of:
• 1994 Garrafeira Port
• 2000 Garrafeira Port
• 1994 Colheita Port
• 2000 Colheita Port

We only have 100 packs available and our recent tastings have sold out. The bottles are 90ml which adds up to a total of 360 ml (just under half of a regular 75cl bottle). This should be enough for 2 to share the experience.

***Please note that these tasting packs are only available for delivery to UK Mainland addresses***

Pack ordered.

Tony: there is a draft of the obvious, in the agreed VW&P house style for single-shipper events. Please approve or correct, most obviously re the ordering of the four wines.

Having had the chance to try out the placemats, I suggest not having them in a “U” format but in a “W” with the two colheitas being top left and top centre-right and the two garrafeiras being bottom centre-left and bottom right.

It got a little confusing to bring a pair of glass off the tasting mat to have them immediately in front of you to compare them side-by-side but have to remember that if you were looking at 1994 the colheita was in your right hand but if you were looking at 2000 the garrafeira was in your right hand.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I like that much more. Garrafeira is the left hand glass in each pair and colheita the right. Thank you.

Unless I'm missing the updated link, then I see both Garrafeiras behind and colheitas in front. Personally I would prefer what you just described, with Garrafeiras left, Colheita on the right, with the 94s at the back (top of page) and 2000s in front; ambivalent about landscape/portrait.

When I tried the wines out last week I found that I was choosing a pair of wines from the same vintage and moving them towards me. The layout above - which has the ‘94s on the left and the ‘00s on the right - would have worked much better. With the latest layout I would slide the pair left / right towards me and always have the garrafeira in my left hand and the colheita on my right. If set as you describe I would be tempted to lift the ‘94s over the top of the ‘00s rather than slide one glass round to the left and the other round to the right.

It comes down to personal preference, but I really like this staggered square layout.

And the placemats (not included in my package) updated, adding the ’19 VP.

I’m very much looking forward to this tasting: it’s not every day one gets to try a garrafeira, let alone two...
