Just on a whim...
1. Fonseca 63
2. Martinez 85
3. Fonseca 85.
Not worth arguing over, and only for a laugh.

Good subject. But I verify that “Best† means “best at time of drinking† rather than “best quality when this wine eventually reaches its peak†. (IMHO makes a huge difference for Fonseca 1985.)
Best four, in alphabetical order, were Fonseca 1963, Fonseca 1966, Fonseca 1970, Noval 1963 (Queens’ College bottling). I’ll agonise a little longer about which one goes out this round.

Difficult, and I'll probably come up with something different tomorrow. But for now:
- Taylors 1963
- Sandeman 1955
- Fonseca 1977

Could the next person not choose a Fonseca please?

Note none of these are Fonseca and of the three listed, the Cruz was the best.
(I would put a twisted emoticon here but can't on a BB.)
Thank you Alex, I knew that you'd come up trumps.

In my point of view the Noval 85 was even worse than the Nacional 77, but here are mine - strictly withouth Fonseca:
1931 Noval
1963 Nacional
1945 Grahams
Axel
P.S. Interesting read from the others
P.S.P.S.: The 88 Vesuvio was much better than the 93

1948 Taylor
1908 Graham
1970 Graham
Ask me in tomorrow, and the list could be slightly different...

And just a little correction... Vesuvio was not made in 1993.

Nor was a NN made in 1977 (or a regular Noval for that matter)...I think that was part of his joke

While I agree with you that the '85 Noval was even worse than the Nacional '77, don't you think the Cockburn '66 was quite splendid?
And what about the Vesuvio 2002? How do you think that compares to the '88 and '93?

I confess - it was an attempt at humour.
Neither the NN '77 nor the Vesuvio '93 exist so by elimination, the best wine on my list must have been the Cruz '89.
I have been found out as the fraud that I am

I prefer the 1988 Vesuvio. It is just hitting its peak at the moment and should hold there a bit longer
Gentlemen: it was a good question.

Gentlemen: it was a good question. Please consider staying, if not exactly on subject, at least not too far from it.

I can't once someone has posted below my message. All I can do is delete the text. An admin can delete the entire post.

AHB,
You can recover your dignity by simply answering the original question. I don't think any deletions are necessary, especially if the thread returns to the original topic.

Come on AHB...get back here.
Here are mine
1927 Constantinos Colheita
1963 Noval Nacional VP
1994 Noval Nacional VP (yes, its way young. But what a monster)
I had to edit my post as I totally forgot about that 94 NN....I know, how could that happen. Well, S**t happens sometimes

Even I immediately caught on to Al B's tongue in cheek post.
Anyway, my top 3 are (in order of preference):
1931 Quinta do Noval - 8 or 9 times this has blown me away
1945 Croft (best bottles have trumped all other '45s/'48s for my palate
1994 Quinta do Noval Nacional - revisit in 2100. I love the Vesuvio and Taylor ... but this is in a very different realm altogether

Conky,
I am guilty, as I jumped on Alex' joke as well.
You are totally right - this is a good topic and worthy a discussion.
Cheers

Deleted AHB's original post as requested but it does make some of the subsequent posts seem weird so I've left them all alone, including first reply. Ho hum.
