Good subject. But I verify that “Best† means “best at time of drinking† rather than “best quality when this wine eventually reaches its peak†. (IMHO makes a huge difference for Fonseca 1985.)

Best four, in alphabetical order, were Fonseca 1963, Fonseca 1966, Fonseca 1970, Noval 1963 (Queens’ College bottling). I’ll agonise a little longer about which one goes out this round.

embarassingly it's a Fonseca 1980 for me, followed by Fonseca 85

everything else, i dont quite remember well enough.

Difficult, and I'll probably come up with something different tomorrow. But for now:

- Taylors 1963
- Sandeman 1955
- Fonseca 1977

Could the next person not choose a Fonseca please?

In my point of view the Noval 85 was even worse than the Nacional 77, but here are mine - strictly withouth Fonseca:

While I agree with you that the '85 Noval was even worse than the Nacional '77, don't you think the Cockburn '66 was quite splendid?

And what about the Vesuvio 2002? How do you think that compares to the '88 and '93?

Neither the NN '77 nor the Vesuvio '93 exist so by elimination, the best wine on my list must have been the Cruz '89.

You can recover your dignity by simply answering the original question. I don't think any deletions are necessary, especially if the thread returns to the original topic.

1963 Noval Nacional VP
1994 Noval Nacional VP (yes, its way young. But what a monster)

I had to edit my post as I totally forgot about that 94 NN....I know, how could that happen. Well, S**t happens sometimes

Even I immediately caught on to Al B's tongue in cheek post.

Anyway, my top 3 are (in order of preference):

1931 Quinta do Noval - 8 or 9 times this has blown me away

1945 Croft (best bottles have trumped all other '45s/'48s for my palate

1994 Quinta do Noval Nacional - revisit in 2100. I love the Vesuvio and Taylor ... but this is in a very different realm altogether
