I was looking through Sworders auction and came across these bottles again i believe this is the third or fourth auction with them in and i have 4 bottles which i bought in one of the auctions. i'm assuming that a few of us have bought lots, i was wondering if anybody had a tried any of these yet? i tasted the sample from the one bottle Sworders openned.

Lots XXXX were bought by the vendor from The Dower House, Tewkesbury and whilst they do not have labels and the capsules are plain, there is reasonable evidence the port dates from 1871 (bottled in the 1970s); please ask for further details. One bottle from this collection was previously opened; the cork for which had the date of 1871 and Cabral which is Serafim Cabral of Quinta de Loueiro.

I'm also wondering how many bottles are out there?

I don’t know much about this Port, other than the fact that there is plenty of it around. I’ve had it a couple of times and it’s very nice, but not in the same class as Scion or the Krohn / Taylor 1863 or the Mourão 100 year old.

I know of 2 bottles of this that have been consumed by denizens of The Port Forum. One in Belgium and one in Seattle. Neither were spectacular. The Belgium bottle has tasting notes recorded at FTLOP.com, while the Seattle bottle was opened at a friend's house and I don't think any of the notes have been published anywhere. I found my notes in an old tasting notebook, and I at least gave it a slightly higher score (92 pts) than the Belgium bottle which received 89, 90, and 89 (100) from the recorded notes. (The last note was 89 for the Port, but 100 for the experience of tasting something that old.)

Both of the above bottles were noted as 1871 Quinta do Loureiro Vinho Velho do Douro.

I've had it once, in Portugal, about 8-10 years ago if I recall correctly. I remember it being very nice but not out of this world great. Not sure the price, but I wouldn't pay too much for just the age of it. It is not in the league of the likes of Scion.

Indeed but of course it is a fraction of the cost of the aforementioned-I picked up a bottle (yet to be consumed) a few years ago for what probly amounted to no more than £60 (it was a mixed lot). My bottle is stencilled but again, probably bottled in the 1970s.

I don't intend to bid for any of these lots, but if someone buys one of the dozens and would like to share the lot with others, I would be interested in taking 2-3 bottles.

i might put a cheeky bid on one of the lots, it depends on how today goes.

Can someone fill me in on the history of this shipper? There is a Cabral Porto & Douro but that says it was set up in 1996 (by Emanuel A. Cabral). They say they are connected to Vallegre who own Quinta da Vista Alegre amongst other businesses. Is the Cabral being discussed here a business run by a previous generation of the same family?

I also picked up four of these from Sworders at the back end of 2019. All in price per bottle including delivery was around £125 (I think).

Shared a bottle with some friends back in December (during one of the brief lockdown respites) and amongst some pretty spectacular company it stood up quite well. Clearly not Scion standard, but a fraction of the price.

Planning to bring another bottle to a physical tasting at some point this year to mark its 150th birthday.

Assuming the price remains sane then I might. If successful will probably offload half.

12 bottles of the Cabral 40YO Tawny secured (along with a few others things which I'm likely to partially offload as well). Will let you know once I've received them, but will put some aside for you. A few more bottles will also be available as I really don't 'need' that many.
