What was the last port you bought?

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

I'm sitting in Top Shop in Oxford Street with my son waiting for wife and daughter to do whatever it is that women do in places like this.

Naturally, my mind turned to port and I found I was imagining what port I will end up buying next, when I get the money.

So, to help pass the time I thought I would ask what was the last bottle(s) of port that you bought.

Mine was a bottle of Morgan 1989 VP bought from Marks & Spencer last Saturday and opened yesterday. Overpriced at £25 but a very enjoyable if straightforward port.

It was either the six Vargellas 1998 or seven Fonseca Guimaraens 1988 just before Christmas. Both bought from supermarkets in pre-Christmas on-line specials.

If I was being pedantic then I would probably say that it was Graham's 1966 bought from Derek for the Deeper Underground but that would be cheating. I could also point to the boxed set of Dow tawnies bought for my brother for one of his clients but I was only an agent in that transaction.

Just today, Graham Malvedos 1996, Graham Malvedos 1979 (a single bottle) and Graham's Crusted Port (bottled 2001). Never tasted a Crusted Port.

Bought my first 2005s: two Fonseca Quinta do Panascal and two Croft Quinta da Roeda for $50 and $45 per bottle, respectively.
