Hello, I've been lurking in the reviews for a while, but figured it was time to join the community. I'm another J in the NY area, and very much the foodie.
I focus on several areas: Port, Sake, Sushi, Cheese, Brandy, and Rieslings (in that order). I run a blog on the topic over here, mostly the japanese cravings on it, though. I view Port as "my extravagance" and, rather than buy fancy tvs that become obsolete I buy bottles that become tasty (I buy for drinking, not reselling). I don't have nearly as impressive a cellar as some of the regulars here, and it's heavily weighted toward 94, 97, 00, and 03; about 40 bottles all told.
I also have opened very little of it to date, maybe 2-3 tops in the past 5 years of collecting, trying to be content with LBVs or a glass at a restaurant. I buy the port so that I'll have a bottle to celebrate with on the spur of the moment, and believe that -- if drunk alone on any given night -- they'll each be a star. That doesn't get me much in the way of comparison understanding, so I'm hoping for an opportunity to join fellow port lovers at tastings (public or private) and would be willing to contribute a bottle or two at such an event.
