In a bottle of Fonseca 1963 was a question rather than a certain answer:

Recognising that this scientific question needed scientific experiment, a round dozen of us gathered to test some 1963s.

30% opacity, red. Full rich mouthfeel, mature red fruits, great balance. I thought this was in good shape and had some further time to go. My WOTN.

N63: red, 40% opaque. Palate starts with heat edging towards white pepper, with indecisive red cherry. WPS thought “sour cherry”.

Bottled by Berry Brothers & Rudd. A lovely red colour, mature but holding up well; 40% opaque. Restrained on the nose although work on the glass does persuade it to release some soft fragrance of sweet red fruit. A touch of harshness comes through on the entry, backed by the ghosts of tannins and a wave of generous red fruit. The fruit is ripe and shows its maturity on the aftertaste, filling the mouth wonderfully before finishing with a hint of tannic dryness. This is a lovely Port that is perfect for drinking today, but is in no rush to be consumed. 91/100
