what makes Guimarraens 1976 so dark?

Yesterday we had a Fonseca Guimarraens 1976. It is extremely dark in color and resembles a Vintage 2000 rather than a 70s port. How is this possible? Vintage 1978-79 are totally transparent and tawny or even yellowish in color while Guimarraens 1976 retains its color. Does anyone know why that is? the color difference is much more than can be explained only by good conditions. Is it a different grape blend? Or what makes is so spectacular?

There is a discussion of this here.

I think that there are other mentions of this port having been 'cooked', I mean no disrespect to the wine by this, if it is good, it is good.
