I don't think I have had the Panascal but have drunk the FG96 a number of times and it is a solid Port. I have some in storage and have seen it on offer in Waitrose and somewhere else (can't remember where) for around £25 per bottle recently.

Still 4 left - not rushing off the shelf at that price.

I've just seen bottles of Graham Crusted Bottled in 1998 appear on the shelves of my local Sainsbury for £14 each.

And all 4 bottles of Noval Nacional 2011 @ £750 have gone from the BBR list.

If only! I did buy one bottle from Berry's just to make sure I got some, but bought at their first offer price - which was bad enough!

In Dublin today for work, I nipped into James Fox's, a venerable tobacconist on College Green, opposite the main gate of Trinity College; an older gentleman recently corrupted me and I was looking for a double corona to take home. Imagine my surprise to discover that, amongst the whiskies on sale, they also had a rather large quantity of Delaforce 1994, at €49.95 / bottle (the bottles were standing upright, resting on an OWC...)
Any thoughts on this vintage / price? I understand that Nick made this one, is that the case?
(I enquired and this is the only port, and the only vintage, that they have.)

It was indeed Nick's first vintage making the port for Delaforce, and might have been his only major vintage (I can't remember if he made the 1997). It's not a bad port, one which I quite enjoyed the only time I tried it. €50 a bottle for an almost mature port of decent quality is a fair price if the bottles haven't been standing upright since being shipped in 1996!

It is now, technically. It comes from the stocks that they received when they purchased Krohn.

My reading:

1. It's now being released as a Taylor product.
2. Had the Port in question been released last year at this time, it would have been released by Wiese & Krohn as a 1964 Krohn Colheita.

Is there a different question regarding the Noel Young Wines offer?

Stop reading it wrong. This is from the Krohn's stock, which TFP acquired when they bought Krohn's the company.

It was Krohn's and now has been bought, bottled, and labeled as Taylor's.

My comment was such as replies such as yours create confusion for those not knowledgeable about what has recently transpired between two companies and the legalitites of the IVDP. As it implies it's not a Taylor's product. That is now not the case.

These are now, legally and technically, really Taylor's. As you are aware one can buy finished Port and legally make it their own once the transfer paperwork is completed with the IVDP.

I have no problem with Taylor's having purchased Krohn, and if they choose to sell it branded as Taylor's then that is understandable, never mind completely their right (and clearly the way they have decided to go). I imagine that will work better in parts of the world where the Krohn brand is far less well known, including the UK.

What surprised me is that they didn't go for something more like "Taylor's 50 Year Krohn Tawny (1964)"; the "Krohn" would have been ignored by people who didn't know what it meant, but potentially added value/cachet to those who might by it specifically based on their knowledge of the quality of Krohn's tawnies.

I'm also surprised that they seem to have completely dropped the word "tawny" in the title. Admittedly Single Harvest Tawny doesn't give the best abbreviation, but "single harvest port"? So now we have the more complex - if it says "vintage port" then it is a ruby port from a single harvest, and "single harvest port" means a tawny from a single harvest; not the best way to clarify for the less-savvy (yes they can read the full label, but I think you get the point).

Phil,
Agree on the naming. There are basically two companies which refuse to put "Colheita" on some of their bottles*. The whole "Single harvest tawny" thing drives me nuts. This isn't the 1600's anymore. I'm quite confident UK residents can figure out what Colheita means, just like the rest of the world has been using for a long time.

*Interesting in that the Symington's do use the term Colheita for some brands, such as Warre's**. Talk about a lack of uniformity

** though a recent check shows Warre's new label has in very small letters under Colheita the words "Single year tawny"

Single Harvest Tawny (or Port) is just dumb. If you're so desperate to avoid using the word "Colheita", then call it Vintage Tawny. "Colheita" is sexier and has more cachet. "Single Harvest Tawny" sounds so... clinical. It's boring.

But really, the correct answer is to call it Colheita because that's what it is.

I think they would all be calling it "Vintage Tawny" if they were allowed, but I thought the rules precluded calling anything "Vintage" except (single harvest) Vintage (ruby) Port, to prevent confusion with all the "vintage character" issues we used to have previously. In that light, and if (whether we like it or not) most potential buyers see the word "Colheita" and move on since they don't understand it, "Single Harvest Tawny YYYY" seems reasonable; Dropping both "Tawny" and "Colheita" and simply calling it "Single Harvest Port" seems like the worst of all worlds however, as it doesn't seem to me like it would help the potential buyer and at worse could cause additional confusion. Changing the labelling rules to allow "Vintage Tawny YYYY" (for single-harvest tawnies only) might be a good solution, if it were possible (unless there is a case against it I have not considered).

I believe that they had to change the rules to call it Single Harvest Tawny, so if they were going to go to the trouble to change the rules they should have changed them to call it Vintage Tawny.

Personally, I think the confusion in Vintage Character was compound. It wasn't a Vintage, it was a blend, so why does it say Vintage on the label? And what, exactly, is Character supposed to mean? (Rhetorical; I get what the label was supposed to convey.)

Neither of those issues are problems with Vintage Tawny, though its introduction would imply that Vintage Port should be re-named to Vintage Ruby.

But yes, I concur with your conclusion: Single Harvest Port is the worst of all.

If anyone is in Luxembourg at the moment, he should go to the local Delhaize and buy a Graham's 10Y Tawny for 14,80 €. They seem to have a discount right now.
But there is no hurry, the normal price is just 15,69 €:

On a mission to discover Croft 04 LBVs, in a Tesco where they have been known to cluster, Taylor 85 was instead found, at £85. This particular store is a most peculiar location for a bottle at this price point. Are TFP just getting it into every Tesco they can? The Wine Society are featuring it as well at the moment; is this a cellar clearance?

Tesco have had T85 on the shelves in their large (mega?)stores near us for several years, at around that price. The smaller (super?)stores here don't carry it.

Yes, accepted. I just wondered why a supermarket branch not normally replete with luxury goods (or even some of the basic staples) should be stocking T85.

The G98 Crusted is lovely juice. With the discount this comes in at just £13.50 for a good Crusted with 16 years of bottle age - not shabby!
