Yes, it's Joseph Roth.
He is one of my favourite authors (thanks for the praise, Daniel, you make me blush). I like his morbid description of and longing for the old Imperial and Royal monarchy.

Daniel's turn.

Agreed Roth is very good. Of course The Radetzky March is the alfa in his constellation of books but i really enjoyed Job as well. If only my German was good enough to re-read in their original language...

Magee, but not tweed.
There will be (former) paramilitaries there. One of them smeared himself with margarine and swam to freedom from a prison ship in Belfast Lough, then clothed himself with a tigerskin patterned car seat.

We turn our attention to an auction, by Messrs. Christie Manson & Woods, on 7 July 1880, “Of The Cellar Of Wines Of Allan Morrison, Esq., Deceased, late of Hall Barn Park, near Beaconsfield; Comprising 70 Dozens of fine Sherry; Madeira; 50 Dozens of Port of the Vintages of 1834. 1842, 1843, and 1845; 110 Dozens of Claret, Château Lafite of 1858, 1864, and 1865; Château Latour of 1864, and 1874; Château Margaux of 1869 and 1870; Mouton Rothschild of 1864; Château Giscours of 1865; St. Estephe, &c.; 200 Dozens of Champagne, of 1865, 1868, 1870, and 1874; Ruinart, Heidsieck, Irroy, Perrier Jouet, Lanson père et fils, Farre, Bollinger, Perinet et fils, and Dagonet et fils; fine White and Red Burgundy; Hock; Sauterne; &c. Also, 80 Dozens of Otard’s Brandy, of 1875; and 50 Dozens of Otard’s Liqueur Brandy (in Champagne bottles); fine old Brandies of Justerini and Brooks; Whisky and Liqueurs”.

The Port was a motley collection of oddities.

Lot 40 was One Dozen and Six Bottles of Cooking Port, Hamilton and Grieve, which sold at 27/- per dozen (auction prices were then always per dozen).

That is your benchmark price.

Lots 38 and 39 totalled almost five Dozens of Port, “Emperor,” 1792, Hamilton and Grieve. To the nearest shilling, at what average per-dozen price did this 82-year-old port sell?

(Note to self: pictures 18911-5.)

I have no idea what the proper notation would be, but I'll guess 540 shillings per dozen. 20x seems a reasonable multiple to start with from cooking wine to an 82-yr old VP.
