The painting is related to the style of Lydos

Post by jdaw1 »

New avatar:
Image
The figure is painted on the side of a drinking cup, described by the Metropolitan Museum of Art as
Terracotta kylix: lip-cup (drinking cup)
Greek, Attic, black-figure, ca. 550-540 B.C.
Signed by Epitimos as potter. The painting is related to the style of Lydos.
Interior, archer on horseback and warrior dismounting.
Exterior, obverse and reverse, profile heads above, inscription between animals below

Fletcher Fund, 1925 (25.78.4)
I just liked it, and, being on the side of a drinking cup, thought it appropriate.

major overhaul of the jdaw1 brand

In a major overhaul of the jdaw1 brand, my avatar has been updated again.

Whilst keeping the old colour scheme, I’ve pruned the margin by a pixel all round and changed the scheme within the circles to something less reliant on texture, larger, and more kinetic. Comments welcomed. Sensible comment not expected.

Re: Jdaw's New Avatar

Post by jdaw1 »

By default, posting on the Malvedos blog gave me a pseudo-random computer-generated avatar. Repairing that entailed visiting Gravatar.com, which allows one to have a common avatar across many blogs. But these avatars have to be square. Yikes! So a square SVG avatar was created, intending that the scalability would work well with Gravatar. So far, so good. (That SVG link will lead some browsers to SVG code, some to the picture.)

For consistency of presentation the original objective my previous :tpf: avatar,

was replaced with the square

Too me this is a powerful expression of the beauty of democracy. You asked us a question, JDAW, and we the people spoke. Phil and I expressed our admiration for the manly demeanour in your new avatar. DRT just about managed to communicate his unfathomable dislike for it. He was in the minority, and his view has been cast aside. However, in your beneficence, you have given way to one of his points and reduced the size of your avatar. Everybody is surely happy now, even Derek.

I agree. Very well drawn.

I think that what's not quite right about the mouth may have something to do with an apostrophe crime. The expression is perhaps registering disapproval?

Yes, I really would.

The smaller version is better, but not yet small enough to be preferred over the JDAW trademark image.

Fixed silently. Thank you.

One more request: could both frames be exactly the same size? The current solution is somewhat inelegant.

My first thought when I saw the new avatar: Wow, John Travolta is on TPF now (the Travolta of 2014, not the one from SNF).
But that may be due to the fact that I had not yet the pleasure of meeting JDAW in person.

The word exotic is derived from the Greek word for "foreign" and retains that connotation when used in UK English (meaning English). The Webster definition describes only part of what the word means in general usage on this side of the Atlantic.
