Contemplating 6 x QdN 2003 @ £45. Any opinions?

That's a great wine and a fair price - by being patient and lucky, you might find it for less, but it will be a challenge. If you know the provenance is good - I would go for them.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Have a little punt at Christies sale on the 8th Sept. before you buy - lot 26 - but don't forget that buyer's premium & VAT will add 40% to the hammer price (and that there's a case of Warre '03 bundled in the same lot...)

Tom

PS - If you don't want the Warre, I'll make a fair offer..!

This might possibly be the first time in Port history that someone in the UK has had to pay more than someone in the US for the same Port. My 2003 Noval, purchased in small batches, averages $37.47/bottle.

Nevertheless, it is a fantastic Port and well worth £45. I got lucky with my purchases because Noval changed importers (or distributors, I forget which) and the former company dumped a significant amount of back stock on the market for cheap.

I purchased the QdN 2003 in the end, I managed to justify it to myself that near perfect provenance is worth the premium. Currently looking at 6xVesuvio 1997 at just under £26 per bottle. My aim is to acquire 600 bottles by my 30th birthday. I'm currently on 154 with 7 years to go giving an average of 5.3 per month.

Can I cajole you into a tasting note? I’ve been wondering what these are like for a while but haven’t yet tried them.

6 x Cockburn 1960 - I've only ever tried this once, at Uncle Tom's 50th birthday drinks and it was quite cheap

I think you will find that it's not very good and it would be very wise to swap your six bottles for six half bottles of Croft LBV 2004.

As luck would have it, I have six half bottles of Croft LBV 04 in front of me now with a label saying "give these to a poor soul who needs to get rid of six dodgy bottles of Cockburn 1960".

It's an omen!

That's such a shame you were the second person to make this suggestion. If only I had known that you also would have liked to have swapped these bottles for halves of Croft 2004 LBV; I could have saved some for you.

We had a good excuse to buy some port, so decided we needed more port with some age on it. That resulted in:

9x Fonseca 1970
2x Cockburn 1967
1x Cockburn 1970

Almost at the same time there was an auction with many lots of Niepoort 1977. I never win at these things, so decided to put a bid on a couple of lots. Ended up with:

18x Niepoort 1977
2x Calem 1977 (came with a lot of Niepoort 77).

Quite pleased now. :)

I think I won two lots at thesame auction as Ronnie has :D

I missed out (don't know the winning bid yet) on a lot with 4 Dow's VP 1980 and the lot that Ronnie won (6x Niepoort 1977 and 2x Calem 1977) (although my bid on the latter was very low, so I'm quite sure I didn't drive the price up too much for Ronnie).

I've won:
1x 1937 Porto Demi Sec 1 Bottle(s) Porto, Pinto (very curious to see what this actually is!!) :D
2x 1970 Vintage Borges et Irmao
1x 1970 Vintage Quinta do Noval
2x 1977 Vintage da Silvas
1x 1977 Vintage Quarles Harris
1x 1978 Vintage Niepoort
1x 1980 Vintage Dows
1x 1984 Vintage Warre’s, Quinta da Cavadinha
1x 1991 Vintage Quinta do Noval
1x 1992 Vintage Burmester, Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
4x 1994 Vintage Dow's

Me happy too! :D :tpf:

6xTaylor 1997 @220ib. Certainly not a steal, but BBX is rather too convenient for impulse purchases...
12xGould Campbell 1985 @ low cost - hopefully provenance will be up to scratch as well!

Plus a few odd singles that shall make appearances at future blind offlines and shall therefore remain nameless!
