A Burmester experiment?

Post by SushiNorth »

I have found a Burmester 85 and Burmester 80 at approximately $50 ea. in a small store near me. Does this seem a reasonable price to pay for what might be a mediocre wine (but an interesting experiment)? Or should I just get something better?

Other unusual things found: Niepoort 92 ($70), Niepoort 83 ($90), and an inventory record of the elusive Dow 80 ($95) -- but they think they sold it. I am going back tomorrow to meet the owner (armed with your comments on purchasing suggestions) and will ask them to poke around for it.

Burmester are not up there with the big boys as far as VP is concerned but it should be solid stuff.

Watch the Ni92 - lots of leakers - I mean lots! - so only buy if you see it coming from a full case of non-leaking bottles. Or, better still, leave the Ni92 and buy all you can of the Dow 80. You can't have enough of that stuff.

Indeed. I will certainly pick up the Burmester then. I additionally have some 85's (Churchill, Dow, Fonseca, Smith Woodhouse, Taylor, and Warres -- however I'd suggest we skip T/F/D as we know they aren't ready. I just had a half of D85 fri for St George's and it was barely ready)

Another thought is to do an 85/80 2xhorizontal

At what point do we ask "how many people are obtainable" ?

After the question "Can you properly hold your liquor yet?"

Wouldn't sound too far away from a JDAW1/G-man lunch tasting

I have the following 1985s that I've been gathering to do a horizontal:

1985 Quinta Do Infantado
1985 Ramos Pinto
1985 Cálem
1985 Barros
1985 Warre
1985 Quinta do Noval
1985 Kopke
1985 Gould Campbell
1985 Smith Woodhouse
1985 Offley Boa Vista
1985 Cockburn
1985 Martinez
1985 Hooper's
1985 Churchill
1985 Ferreira
1985 Quarles Harris
1985 Dow
1985 Graham
1985 Fonseca
1985 Taylor (Fladgate)

Of note, I need to obtain Burmester, Croft, Niepoort, and Sandeman. I'm sure that there are many others that I do not have, but I'm not going for absolute completeness. I would like to have all of the names that people are likely to recognize, though, thus the need for those 4 at a minimum.

At present I have not even started considering a date.

did i mention croft? i have a croft. Sadly, it sounds like that burmester 85 may have been an inventory over there. I will be checking it out soon.

The only Burmesters I have ever had are the 1963 and the 1970. I enjoyed both, but neither are going to set the world on fire. Roy says nice things about the 1985. If I was in your shoes I would buy the two Burmesters out of sheer curiosity, probably the Niepoort 1983 out of curiosty and the Dow 1980 but moan a bit about the price - £60 for a 1980. Anyone would think there was something special about the year!
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

2026: DR Very Old White, Graham Stone Terraces 2011, Quevedo Branco 1986 b.2026

I've had the Niepoort 83. It was a nice port, if slightly uneventful. But certainly not something I would mind drinking again.

1985 is suppose to be good vintage for Burmester. I had 1953 Burmester a couple of years ago and was just OK. Burmester is better known for Colheita.

Burmester 85 was a shelf tag for a long gone wine, acquired the Burmester80, Niepoort92, and Niepoort83. None of which will assist us with an 85 tasting, but i hope that they will come in useful. Made a new Port acquaintance, provided extra cards and contact info. The Niepoorts may have been a little pricey, but worth the investment :)

Hooper's '85... Do they actually have a Qunita? It's not one of their better vintages.

Since Hooper's is a brand of Real Companhia Velha / Royal Oporto, I bet it's made from a blend of their many quinta's, and possibly bought in grapes. I've never tasted the Hooper's 85, but the RCV is awful.

Thank you for the pictures.

Royal Oporto owns many brands. This might be related to the quality of what should be their finest product.
