Re: 50 Year Old Tawnies - 1 October 2024
We're a team of 8, now. The Kopke and Sandeman are both ready. I've PM'd @nac re his bottle.
Here's what I propose ordering in from Portugal:
Poças (206.63 EUR)
Dalva (191.02 EUR)
Vista Alegre (185.81 EUR)
Messias (160.12 EUR)
Barão de Vilar (123.78 EUR)
and from VWP:
Quinta da Devesa 50 cL (£139)
Quinta da Devesa white 50 cL (£119)
(so ~£124 per man for both orders).
Given the turnout, I think the São Leonardo (at 416.63 EUR) and the Graham's (at 406.54 EUR) are probably a bridge too far? We're also sitting at 10 bottles, which I think is about right.
If I've missed anything, please let me know ASAP as I'd like to get in the order in over the next few days.
Thanks all!

I've only had the Pocas 50 year-old and in my opinion, it is excellent! I have 2 of them in the cellar from my recent trip with Glenn in May.M.Charlton wrote: ↑18:43 Tue 17 Sep 2024 We're a team of 8, now. The Kopke and Sandeman are both ready. I've PM'd @nac re his bottle.

Good stuff, folks.
Please send me any specific food orders by 22 September. I'll send the order to the B&F on 23 September, so absent any specific requests you will receive your default order (or, order on the night if you do not have a default order).
Cheers.

Phenomenal speed - thanks!jdaw1 wrote: ↑22:20 Wed 18 Sep 2024 Current draft of the placemats; pictures added to first post. Please check thoroughly.
On review, please could the following adaptations be made:
TC to MSC;
JGH to CPR; and
HTWH be removed.
Messias as Ms (for consistency with the abbreviations thread).
Date should be 1st October 2024.
Re: 50 Year Old Tawnies - 1 October 2024
Silly. Apologies, and fixed.
Done.
My standing orders are to include Harry in everything: either he is coming, and comes; or he’s not coming, and comes anyway. Hence not done.
Please confirm now good.

Oh I see - makes sense!
All looks good, bar Messias being “MS” instead of “Ms” (massive pedantry on show I’m afraid), thank you.

You’re correct, Neil - the above is purely for the “bulk order” purposes. Incidentally, the wines ordered from Portugal have arrived

Chaps
Apologies but I'm going to have to withdraw from this tasting.
Work issues make being in London that day difficult.

Thank you, Julian.
The placemats have been printed. I aim to be at the B&F tomorrow at around 1630/1700 to get things set up.
Very much looking forward to this one!

Re: 50 Year Old Tawnies - 1 October 2024
Yes please, someone post their thoughts on the wines and the scoresheet for those of us who couldn’t be there.
I’m thinking of Glenn, obviously, since I’m British and therefore only drink Vintage Port.

Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Thank you for posting the score sheet, Michael. The scoring on the Kopke and Pocas doesn't surprise me; however, I am surprised that the Vista Alegre didn't garner any points. Their tawnies are usually pretty good.

Re: 50 Year Old Tawnies - 1 October 2024
Thanks for posting the score sheet Mike. That’s a very interesting result.
I like that someone is standing out from the crowd but from the scoresheet it looks like they are struggling to find their market!
Most people seem to have gone for power over finesse in their 50yo blends with, in my limited experience, the notable exception of Sandeman. Their biggest and most powerful tawny is the 40yo with the 50yo being refined, elegant and incredibly complex.

Now I'm extremely tempted by that Kopke. I might be able to get it for 130/140 euros, it's very tempting.

I'm not surprised by the Kopke and Pocas, but I am surprised that the Valegre didn't receive any votes or mentions at all. My memory of it is that it's a pretty amazing Port.
