1963 Gonzalez Byass

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

We only have one tasting note for this Port so I thought it was about time to post another.

Gonzalez Byass 1963. Decanted 4 hours. Rose red colour, 40% opaque. Gentle spiced cedar wood and redcurrant jelly on the nose. Elegant on the palate with the redcurrant showing beautifully, clean and fresh. Hints of tannins still remain on the palate, highlighted by the acidity that keeps everything sharp and focused. The aftertaste is modest, a little cranberry, but the finish is huge and complex. So many flavours appear with the redcurrant at the start and some lingering and persistent aniseed at the end. Elegant and very impressive. Happily this is the first bottle out of a full case. 93/100. Tasted 20-Sep-2024.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
