2024: 14th August - Bring a bottle of Port younger than 1815

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

On Wednesday 14th August a few of us got together at short notice and drank some lovely Port. All bottles were served blind so we were able to make fools of ourselves — but not this time! This time the monkey was worse than the attendees:

The wines were:
  1. Graham 1948
  2. Taylor 1960, bottled by Thomson of Leith
  3. Half bottle of Berry Brothers & Rudd Own Label 1985
  4. Half bottle of Niepoort 1991
  5. Messias 20YO Tawny
  6. Quinta das Carvalhas 20YO Tawny
  7. Warre 1960, bottled by Berry Brothers
The blind guessing scoring gave 1 point for the correct style of Port, 1 point for the correct shipper and 1 point for the correct vintage.
The monkey scored 3 points for identifying that wines 1, 4 and 7 were Vintage Port.
Harry and I scored 6 points, Neil and Martin 4 and Julian 3. Not too shabby a showing on this occasion!

Wine of the night scores were 8 points to the Graham 1948, 7 to Niepoort 199, 6 to Warre 1960, 5 to Carvalhas 20YO, and 4 to the BBR 1985.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
