Re-wax that leaking bottle

Post by mcoulson »

A week or so ago I spent half a day with Alex B seeing what's involved with re-waxing bottles and the answer is not much other than a very enjoyable day out and an excellent lunch :-)

Anyway Alex kindly gave me a chunk of wax from his collection that came for the British Wax company.

Hunting around on the Internet there's loads of people offering food grade bottle wax and pretty much all of them are priced between £30 & £40 a Kg

I was chatting with Harry about this and the potential of tracking down some wax of our own.

British wax do a number of standard colours the down side is that they want to sell 5Kg at a time but the upside is it's £15 plus vat per Kg

I'm sure it's not just Harry and I that are looking to do this so I thought I'd post here and see if anybody wants to join in

I quite like the Burgundy Red 195C and Harry likes Blue 2747C

So the question here is does anybody want to join in ?

1Kg re-waxes around 100 bottles apparently so here's a chance to buy a life times supply of wax, as long as we can get to 5Kg of any colour we are after that will work - you can even end up owning multiple colours !!

If your up for this please post here and state your colour and desired amount

Delivery would be to the B&F

I've run out (no longer have access to the proper stuff), colour not important.

I'd be up for a kilo of a slightly weird colour - basically anything from 371C or below on the list.

What Martin hasn't shown you is that you can also use a John Bull printing set to stamp the name of the wine into the wax before it fully sets. I'll go and take a picture of one of them now...

My second choice of colour is the Green 2259C,

To confirm I'm looking for 1kg.

I'll take some - Green 2259C. 500g. Or 1kg if that proves necessary.

Many thanks Martin!

I think we will need to do 1Kg per colour unless there is a rush and then we can split it down lower ....

1st post has a summary of what people are up for

I use the 2259C and would live another kilo as running low.
As a general point I was anything really old even if the seal looks good and will sometimes just go over the metal cap.
The movement of old ports after being in the same place makes them not only more likely to start seeping but I wonder if the evaporation through the cork increases.
I want to keep any old port I buy at the same fill level I buy it!

Would you pm your mobile and I will Revolut you? I'm hoping Alex will collect my 1kg. I only need a small amount (500g max) so if anyone has missed ordering please feel free to take some of mine.

Ooh, missus, the VAT rate dropped to 13⅓%. Must take bottles out of bond before it returns to 20%.
