NV Fonseca Crusted 2001

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

NV Fonseca Crusted, bottled 2001. Purchased in 2007 and cellared until being opened at 09.15 on 30th March, decanted at 14.15 and drunk at 19.15.

A dark strawberry red colour, 70% opaque. A sweet and fragrant nose, strawberry jam; very attractive. Smooth and velvety texture on the palate. The fruit has matured and rounded out in a delicious way, an elegant mid-weight. The mid-palate has a nice herbal complexity, and very gentle tannins blended with a fresh acidity keeping the wine wonderfully balanced. Strawberry jelly aftertaste, a little menthol warmth and a long, long finish. So easy to drink, delicious and elegant, but a wine which will happily hold on for another decade or two. 91/100. 30-Mar-23.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
