1977 Gould Campbell

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Gould Campbell 1977, opened at 21.45, decanted at an unknown time and tasted at 19.00-19.15.

A lovely mature red colour, 80% opaque. Warm fruit compote on the nose, gently spiced. Smooth texture entry, a little alcohol showing but with wonderful fruit. Exotic spices on the aftertaste, rich in the lovely mature fruit. The finish is lovely. The wine is mature yet still youthful, and beautifully expressive. 92/100. (Decanted through the metal filter.)

Sample B (Melita unbleached coffee filter paper) was strongly my favourite of the four samples. Sample C (freehand) I thought showed on a par with sample A. Sample D (bleached coffee filter paper) I preferred to A and C but thought was less expressive than sample B. 92/100. Tasted at the Decanting Experiment on 28-Feb-23.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
