2003 Quevedo Colheita (bottled 2022)

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Bottled in 2022 for the advent calendar. Matured in balsiero until 2017, then for 5 years in a (young, as in less than 20 years old) burgundy barrel. 2003 was a challenging vintage with very high temperatures, low yields, extremely concentrated fruit with a lot of freshness and a lot of tannin.

A little darker in tone than the cask matured version, with a much smaller rim. Powerful nose, lifting out of the glass beautifully, generous fruit and a little soapy beeswax. The wax element shows on the fruit on the palate; plenty of dried cranberry and cherry. Big tannins in the wine mask the acidity, the wine tastes less developed and a little rougher than the cask aged wine due to the nature of the tannins. 89/100. 29-Jan-23. Decanted 1 hour.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
