1987 Taylor Vargellas

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

The first bottle from a case of 6, purchased as a late release from Porto in 2006. Decanted at 09.15, tasted at 20.15. Deep red with a little browning on the rim; 90% opaque. A very unusual - but not unpleasant - savoury and meaty nose, reminding me of a venison and juniper berry stew. Lovely texture on the palate; deeply fruity yet with that savoury tone - rich and lovely. Generous sweet and ripe fruit but wonderfully balanced. The savoury tone appears on the aftertaste, along with sweet black cherry and dark chocolate all through the finish. A fabulous bottle of Port. 94/100. Tasted 17-Jan-23. Double-decanted for 6 hours.
Top Ports in 2022: Quinta do Noval Nacional 1931. I have never drunk such a wonderful bottle of Port. I cried with joy.

2023: Fonseca 1966. There are not many better Ports.
