Apparently it is over a decade since I’ve tried a QdVDM vintage port and very much to my surprise no-one has reviewed this Port on since 2009.
The colour is impressively dark in the middle, fading to a purple / red on the rim.
The nose is rather attractive. Vibrant red fruits with cherries predominating. Not widely complex but satisfying good.
The mouth has an immediate but short hit of icing sugar. There is good acidity and a huge backbone of tannins which are reasonably rounded and not too aggressive but are prominent. The fruit is ever-present and much like the nose: good red cherries. However, it plays second-fiddle to the structure until we hit a long aftertaste.
I don’t think I’ve ever been that impressed by the 2000 vintage but this is an enjoyable Port which cries out for another decade in the bottle.
Rating*: P
* A Note on Ratings
My rating system attempts to answer the question “is this a good Port?” one of three ways: N—No; P—Possibly; or C—Certainly. Ports generally are weighted slightly by their category. Therefore, a Ruby Port might receive a C rating for Certainly good which it might not were it to be a Vintage Port. I sometimes modify my rating with a plus or minus indicating that the Port is better or worse than might be expected for this category.
